A very rare meteorological event occurred Saturday evening into early Sunday morning when three Category 4 hurricanes were ongoing simultaneously in the Pacific Ocean. At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, Huricane Kilo (135 mph) was located well southwest of the Hawaiian Islands followed by Hurricane Ignacio (140 mph) to the east of Hawaii and Hurricane Jimena (140 mph) in the eastern Pacific. Kilo was the last of the trio to reach Category 4 status, doing so on Saturday evening. For reference, hurricanes with maximum sustained winds of 130-156 mph are classified as Category 4, which is the second highest category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. However, by 5 p.m. EDT Sunday both Kilo and Ignacio had begun to weaken and were classified as Category 3 hurricanes, while Jimena maintained its Category 4 status.

Dr. Phil Klotzbach of Colorado State University and blogger for wunderground.com said in a tweet on Saturday that this was also the first time the central Pacific, bounded by the International Date Line and 140 degrees west longitude, has had two major hurricanes (Kilo and Ignacio) ongoing at the same time. This piles on to what has already been a record hurricane season in the central Pacific basin.

The Pacific tropical activity can be attributed, in part, to impressively warm ocean water.
http://www.weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/three-category-4-hurricanes-pacific-kilo-ignacio-jimena http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/ [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Vs8r1A4.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Hao5vYR.jpg[/img_thumb] Incredible but beautiful at the same time. Hawaii could've gotten hit real hard. (and because someones going to say: Yes they're Hurricanes, not Cyclones or Typhoons)
This is terrifying. Hurricanes are extremely dangerous by themselves, but 3 at once?
Global warming
It's only gonna get worse, most of the West coast is going into a cooling period while most of the area in the ocean is staying hot. It's gonna be a really fun late hurricane season folks.
This is a good idea to show to people to what happens when Climate Change and Global warming go unchecked.

It's those fucking hybrids I know it
There will not be World War III. There will be World Disaster I.
my god it's the worst time to be in hawaii right now. so humid as fuck.
IIRC they don't expect any to hit Hawaii. I'd still evac if this sort of thing is going to happen because Hawaii always gets hit.
We talked about this in my Meteorology lecture today. They were all predicted to miss Hawaii, so I don't think anyone was particularly worried.
Thanks Al Gore
four horsemen are here
