• Swedish police arrest man in 'drugs bust' after finding huge stash of sugar in car
Police in Sweden were left red-faced when they arrested a man in what was believed to be a major drugs bust, only to find he was carrying bags full of sugar, not amphetamines. Officers found around 20 plastic bags of white powder stuffed in the back of a car after they stopped the driver in Skellefteå, in the north of the country. Upon questioning, the man is alleged to have admitted to being in possession of amphetamines, according to the local Skellefteå newspaper Norran, before changing his story to say the bags in fact contained dextrose, a form of sugar derived from starches. A quick on-the-spot test also suggested the presence of drugs, so officers received an arrest warrant from the district court to take the man into custody. But according to the Swedish news agency TT, more advanced lab tests showed the white powder was indeed nothing more than dextrose. I can't be the only one whose first thought was, "I wonder how many other fake transportation operations they have?"

The man has since been released. Police say it remains unclear why the man initially said he was in possession of drugs.
This is odd, was the dude just having a laugh or something?
This is odd, was the dude just having a laugh or something?
Drug mules running trial runs often do so with bags of sugar, if they get caught they either get off or get off light for wasting peoples time.
This is odd, was the dude just having a laugh or something?
Maybe he was worried that faulty tests would make the police think that he wouldn't be telling the truth if he said it was sugar, so instead of taking chances with being prosecuted harsher for lying he just admitted to having amphetamines.
Drug mules running trial runs often do so with bags of sugar, if they get caught they either get off or get off light for wasting peoples time.
You would think that because of this very reason, police would have follow up investigations of people who get caught for this, just in case.
You would think that because of this very reason, police would have follow up investigations of people who get caught for this, just in case.
Perhaps they do keep an eye on the individual? Or they know that if he belonged to an organization, he wouldn't be doing that route again instead other faces who have not been in the news recently would do so
You would think that because of this very reason, police would have follow up investigations of people who get caught for this, just in case.
They do, but the drug mules arent aware of it, for all they know they are transporting ACTUAL drugs, its the organisation behind it that tests the waters with sugar.
Was it just a prank? Was there some sort of hidden camera too? Why in the world would you tell the police you're transporting drugs when in fact it's simply sugar?
They do, but the drug mules arent aware of it, for all they know they are transporting ACTUAL drugs, its the organisation behind it that tests the waters with sugar.
Which would explain why he admitted it. He might of actually thought he was transporting drugs.
starch dextrose is also a common cutting ingredient by criminal organizations for amphetamines. who knows what the backstory for this is, something illicit for sure, but since you can't go around the bureucracy of things he got off light.
Whatever his reason for carrying sugar, it's just more evidence to the pile of how field drug test kits are bullshit.

Maybe he thought it was drugs but ended up getting ripped off.
Maybe he thought it was drugs but ended up getting ripped off.
You would have to be a complete idiot to buy that quantity of drugs without even tasting any of it first
The best part is that sugar will throw a false-positive in almost any field drug kit
Does anyone know how these field test kits work? I didn't manage to find anything reliable on the web.
Most field drug test kits are basically just tubes containing chemicals that react in a certain way to certain drugs. For example, cobalt thiocyanate turns blue when exposed to cocaine. They're unreliable as fuck because they often react the same way to many other harmless substances. Cobalt thiocyanate also turns blue when exposed to common household cleaners, among many other things, and conditions like cold or hot weather or poor lighting can further skew the results. They suck.
couldn't find any detailed information but cobalt thiocyanate supposedly reacts with secondary and tertiary amines which isn't a very specific test at all, this is so bad lmfao [editline]8th September 2016[/editline] okay a modification makes it more specific for cocaine but I can imagine a lot of other compounds will give similar results [editline]8th September 2016[/editline] analytical chemistry did away with chemical tests decades ago why are we still relying on these to arrest people
Which would explain why he admitted it. He might of actually thought he was transporting drugs.
Doesn't explain why he was the one who later, changed his story and said it was dextrose. What, did they let him taste it or something?
