British tourist kidnapped in Kenya 'held by al-Shabab'
Somalia's government says it believes a British tourist kidnapped in Kenya is being held by the Islamist insurgent group al-Shabab.
Judith Tebbutt, 56, was kidnapped by gunmen from a remote Kenyan resort at Kiwayu, north-east of Lamu island.
The gang also shot dead her 58-year-old husband, David Tebbutt.
Somalia's defence minister, Hussein Arab Issa, said Mrs Tebbutt, from Hertfordshire, had been taken across the border into Somalia by al-Shabab.
But the Somali government has not ruled out the possibility that another group might be holding her.
Forensics searches
Kenyan military helicopters were on patrol on the north Kenyan coast on Friday, flying directly over the safari lodge where the couple were attacked.
British police, some wearing white forensics suits, have been combing the scene for clues.
There are unconfirmed reports that Mrs Tebbutt is near to the southern Somali port of Kismayo which lies in an area controlled by al-Shabab - although it is not thought this necessarily means she is being held by the al-Qaeda-linked group.
BBC East Africa correspondent Will Ross said the ideas and aims of al-Shabab's followers varied.

It is possible that Mrs Tebbutt's captors have no political agenda but are aiming, along with pirates and their financiers, to make as much money as possible from a ransom.
The Somali government has said it was doing everything in its power to gain her release.
But if she was in al-Shabab territory the Mogadishu regime would need assistance from other countries, our correspondent said.
The UN-backed government controls the Somali capital, Mogadishu, but little other territory. Al-Shabab dominates most southern and central areas.
'Tragic case'
Our correspondent said very few facts were known about what happened to Mrs Tebbutt after she was taken away by an armed gang in a speedboat.
After the arrest of at least one Kenyan man there is speculation that the gunmen were a mix of Kenyan and Somali nationals.
The couple come from Bishop's Stortford and their son Oliver lives in Watford.
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "We are doing everything we possibly can on this desperately tragic case."
The Foreign Office continues to advise against all but essential travel to within 30km (18 miles) of Kenya's border with Somalia.
Somalia has been wracked by fighting between various militias for two decades, so weapons are widely available and there are many armed groups who could be responsible.
Correspondents say al-Shabab has not previously seized foreigners far from its own territory, while the numerous pirate gangs normally kidnap ships and their crew for ransom rather than operating on land
Let me guess. They travelled to a dangerous place without hiring any mercenaries or guards.

I almost choked to death on the last one I had, but that was about 5 months ago.

Still, I wouldn't take my chances.
I think it's so awful that her husband was shot dead. Not only is she captured by a group of extremists who probably treat her like dirt and make her life hell, but even if she is released her husband is dead.
Her husband has been shot dead D:
What a terribly unoriginal name. 'Al-Shabab' means 'The Guys' in Arabic.
Poor her though :(
Of all the places in the world you'd go on holiday to.
Meh, the terrorists will be killed one way or another.
oh god a woman in a camp with a bunch of men...shit i feel bad for her
I misread the title as "British tourist kidnapped in Kenya held by Kebab"
My main question here is why, out of all the places in the world, would you go to Kenya? Especially so near a war-ridden area of Africa. Makes no sense... But, fucking hell, that sucks major asshole.
Lol, Islam is such a funny religion. Killing people in the name of non existent entities. What a joke.
They should just nuke that entire continent and start over. You can't change the type of life they have grown accustomed to.

Islamic extremism is nothing but ignorant idiocy, but there is a non-murderous (true) version of the religion. The extremists are just as much an enemy to normal muslims as they are to anyone else.

I don't want to start anything but its not like Islam is the only religion in the world that kills in the name of it's God.
Also nuking Africa is a just a dumb idea.

Typical Islamophobic response.

uh, America does that too.

I don't think you could say that the non-violent version of most abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) are the "true" versions.
If by true religion you mean the one which is practised most as it is outlined in the specific holy text, then it would be the violent practitioners that would be considered correct.
Over time though people usually allow a small amount of common sense and their own thinking to permeate religious beliefs and find little write off excuses which allow them to explain why they don't want to kill everyone but still consider themselves true believers.
Most Holy books have sections that forbid violence on others and sections that condone it.
It pretty much the reason basing the way you live your life off a holy book is a pretty dumb thing to do.
One minute God says thou shalt not kill and next he's wiping sinners off the face of the earth.
Take your pick.

I feel like this is said every time the word "extremist" is mentioned.

I guess that's why people always say that the words never change, you just interperate them differently.
Like, some people - most often extremists such as these - see the killing as neccessary, or simply want to justify it. Other, more peacful believers, can see God wiping away the sinners as many number of things less violent or, in more radical idealogies, justified.
That's kind of why I find religion such an interesting subject. It's stupid to say that it's inherently wrong when so many millions of combinations exist. It's no different to saying a particular race is better than the other, being instantaneously judgmental based off of one of many of a particular group.
Religion doesn't have to be a bad thing. Chrisitan morals are a good thing, being told not to kill or steal are good.
But when someone will sit in front on me and tell me that two people who are in love can't get married or that violence against someone is alright becuase the magic man who lives in the sky told them so. Then I have a problem with religion.

This is what I meant, I should've been more subjective.

Kenya is quite a popular holiday destination for people from the UK, its usually quite safe I would assume.

Can we all stop suggesting nuking continents? If you ignore all of the political issues it would literally fuck up the entire world.
Not to mention Africa is not the middle east, and has more Christians than Muslims, suggesting to nuke Africa makes no sense at all. Are people not taught geography any more?
