• Ubuntu 11.10 Installation issues..

Hello, recently i got a free gaming pc (its really old dont expect much) that i had received from my brother. Specs are.. Intel 2 Core Duo 3.0 GHz Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT 4GB of RAM 1.5 TB of storage (on 3x 500GB HDD's) No OS at all. I want to get windows 7 for it, but in the meantime i want to be able to use it. so thus im going to install ubuntu 11.10 to it, and thats EXACTLY what i did, but then i ran into some issues... First off, the computer uses a RAID5 setup/array/whatever you call it, causing the installation to freakout on where to put the Grub-installer at. because at the end of the installation i get and error saying something like "grub-installer failed to install, this is a fatal error" -and when i turn on the computer in hopes of linux working... it doesnt. after all the posting i get a black screen with a flashing underscore sign. my belief as to what the problem is is my RAID5 setup, and i do not know what the correct partitions are for this. please help me facepunch!
Ubuntu shouldn't even be aware that you have a raid setup (assuming it's hardware raid). It should see the thing as one big hard drive.

EDIT: Actually, I dont know if its hardware or software raid, my brother never mentioned it.
How the fuck is that a "really old computer" ?
The hardware on the inside is 5 years old.
It probably hardware raid. For gaming, software raid is the dumbest thing you could do. About the missing 500G, RAID5 needs to allocate some space on every drive to be able to restore the others if they fail. This is why you're missing some space. Could you go in details as in how you install ubuntu (partitioning, etc.)

Make sure all the space is unpartitioned, then try to install from there. I think the installer should automatically create a partition that it requires.
Usually it should ask you how you want to partition it. I would pick "Use the entire disk". Later in the install there should be a section that says advanced options (after the partitioning). This is where you tell it to install GRUB. Make sure that it tries to install it on /dev/sda or sda (I forgot their naming scheme).

I also noticed that on my main hdd the partition setting for it says "do not use" and the other says "swap" so im at a dead-end here, i dont know what to do.
