Chris Gunness is a spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which operates a number of schools and shelters within the Gaza Strip. On Wednesday, another of the agency’s schools was shelled, resulting in the death of 15 Palestinians, according to Reuters, who had gathered there for the security they expected to find at a shelter in a refugee camp.
At the end of an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic, Gunness broke down into a fit of emotion. The video below shows the spokesman sobbing as the interview concludes.
Speaking to Buzzfeed after the interview aired, Gunness said the agency is “completely overwhelmed,” and that five of its employees had been killed in Gaza. “I’m not emotionally drained,” Gunness said. “I’m made of a sterner stuff, as my English grandmother would say.”
Later on Wednesday, Gunness tweeted that there are 219,657 displaced Palestinians living in U.N.R.W.A. camps. Many of these Gazans arrived at these camps after being ordered by Israel to evacuate their homes.
Gunness suggested to Buzzfeed that viewers of his sobbing not misplace their empathy: “My feelings pale into insignificance compared to the enormity of the tragedy confronting each and every other person in Gaza at this time. It’s important to humanize the statistics and to realize that there is a human being with a heart and soul behind each statistic and that the humanity that lies behind these statistics should never be forgotten.”
In a statement released earlier Wednesday, U.N.R.W.A. commissioner-general Pierre Krähenbühl said U.N. schools had been struck six times during the present conflict, and that the attack on Jabalia Elementary Girls School appears to have been executed with “Israeli artillery.” As is the case in other attacks on U.N. sites, Krähenbühl said the Israel Defense Forces had been given the location of the shelter (in Jabalia’s case, the agency said it warned the I.D.F. 17 times).
“We have moved beyond the realm of humanitarian action alone,” Krähenbühl said. “We are in the realm of accountability. I call on the international community to take deliberate international political action to put an immediate end to the continuing carnage.”
The White House condemned the shelling of the United Nations school, without mentioning that Israel was reportedly behind the shelling. Instead, the White House continued to blame Hamas for allegedly storing arms at U.N. sites:
The United States condemns the shelling of a UNRWA school in Gaza, which reportedly killed and injured innocent Palestinians – including children – and UN humanitarian workers.
We are extremely concerned that thousands of internally displaced Palestinians who have been called on by the Israeli military to evacuate their homes are not safe in UN designated shelters in Gaza. We also condemn those responsible for hiding weapons in United Nations facilities in Gaza.
This is a terrible conflict. The only ones suffering are the civilians of both sides.
That's heart wrenching
I'd cry too if I knew I'd be unable to do anything due to the higher ups constantly trying to keep every side fellated instead of actually doing shit about it.
good to see the white house is still sucking israel's cock
I want to give him a hug :(

Except the US condemned Israel's actions though?
Except the US condemned Israel's actions though?
Once.
and after how long?
That doesn't mean the Israeli government will stop doing what they're doing to the Gazan people.
Except the US condemned Israel's actions though?
That'll show 'em!

What do you want them to do? Condem them twice?
HEY GUYS, REMEMBER WHEN WE SAID YOU'RE BAD? YEAH YOU'RE STILL BAD.
Except the US condemned Israel's actions though?
The US condemns Israel the same way Russia condemns the fighters in Ukraine, they say it publicly then turn around and give them more weapons.
That'll show 'em!
Better then what they normally do regarding Israel's actions. Which is jack shit.
Yeah, I understand it's just words, but it's not sitting there and sucking their dick 24/7.
Except the US condemned Israel's actions though?
For me condemning would be to stop funding their state.
Well, "Hey guys, you're bad, but here, have a few billion dollars." Rings a bit hollow.
Damn I was going to think this would be humorous and and there would be funny ratings for no fucking reason but instead I got greeted by feels and heart wrenching emotions, poor guy.

And if you read it, you'd understand lesson number 1 as to why you should never trust the headlines Reddit users give to articles.

"Actually doing shit" like what? Setting up safe zones that will be bombed anyway? Or are you talking about the fabled military intervention (which people in Ukraine threads also allude to)? Either way nothing will change because there will be no military intervention. The UN is designed to stop international military action in situations like this rather than to implement it.

The US could stop the financial aid to Israel.

The US is literally giving billions of dollars a year to a country that is comitting mass murder on civilians. Whether or not you believe that is justified as self defense (and it's my personal opinion that you'd be off your god damn rocker to do so) the least they could do is demand civilian casualties be almost entirely eliminated before any further funding is sent. Losing billions a year in funding might actually force Israel to change the way they're doing things

They were giving the aid before the mass murders?
I don't get it you guys want us to go to war with Israel or something? Will that make us redeem ourselves and prove we aren't zionists?

While I don't like what Israel is doing, and they cannot possibly justify attacks on civilian populations, there is absolutely no way to eliminate civilian casualties in this situation, as Hamas is using many as human shields, but don't get me wrong, Israel is definitely not the good guy, and they have also targeted civilian locations (seemingly on purpose). Though Hamas needs to be dismantled, if it weren't for Iron Dome and Israel's defence installations, there would be large amounts of casualties on their civilians by the indiscriminate fire of rockets from Hamas in Gaza. Israel are starting to seem more and more bloodthirsty now, lowering themselves to the level of Hamas by also targeting civilian locations.

This is such a fucking stupid argument, if Hamas is using human shields then that must mean you have NO CHOICE but to blow the shit out of civilians as well right?
My dad's girlfriend worked for the UN in Gaza a year or so ago.
She said it was both inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.
Its a real tough job over there trying to deal with such a terrible situation.

I thought they did too, guess not.
Gah, my heart strings.
I'm not in any way a nationalist and I can't stand Israel but there's something that's bothering me about all these people pointing the finger at us constantly. We're not the only fucking nation that supplies them with arms and goods, are we the biggest? Sure.
We shouldn't be arming them anymore until this one sided fiasco ends in a just peace for all, but then again most of the UN and EU members are as toothless as we are on that regard.
What do you want them to do? Condem them twice?

I wish our government would bring more attention to what the Israeli government is doing to Gaza, in a non-biased manner. I really wish they could/would do more, but it'd probably only create an even bigger conflict.

How did my suggestion of "stop giving aid to a country that is committing war crimes" turn into "you have to go to war with israel"??
Except the US condemned Israel's actions though?
Won't stop us from plopping 3 million dollars into their laps to fund the Iron Dome.
Something tells me most of that will not go to the Iron Dome at all; it'll just go to more horrid atrocities.
Won't stop us from plopping 3 million dollars into their laps to fund the Iron Dome.
You realize if the Iron Dome goes down, even more civilians are going to die, right?
