Pulling out of NAFTA could cost the U.S. economy more than 30,000 jobs in the auto sector alone, and lead to higher prices and less choice for American customers, an automotive research think-tank says. A new report from the Michigan-based Center for Automotive Research (CAR) concludes president-elect Donald Trump's oft-repeated plan to tear up or renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, and slap punitive tariffs of as much as 35 per cent on U.S. companies offshoring their production, would do little to spur U.S. jobs production, and in fact would likely lead to a sharp loss.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/manufacturing-jobs-trump-mexico-1.3932234
Any move by the United States to withdraw from NAFTA or to otherwise restrict automotive vehicle, parts and components trade within North America will result in higher costs to producers, lower returns for investors, fewer choices for consumers, and a less competitive U.S. automotive and supplier industry. Counter to the incoming Trump Administration’s goal of creating manufacturing jobs the withdrawal from NAFTA or the implementation of punitive tariffs could result in the loss of at least 31,000 U.S. automotive and parts jobs
The CAR publication
See no actually we'll just put the jobs in America so actually we get a million jobs try harder libturd hahaha :^) /s
Why does Trump want to withdraw from NAFTA?
I only ever heard bad things about NAFTA such as lowering our standards to US ones and having jobs shipped to Mexico.
fuck automotive, aerospace manufacturers would get fucked over considerably as well
jobs saved to date by Trump: ~550 down from 1,400 jobs potentially lost in auto sector alone: >31,000, to say nothing of the other sectors, and the immense losses in the economy this will generate. And they wonder why people were begged to not vote this guy into power.
I only ever heard bad things about NAFTA such as lowering our standards to US ones and having jobs shipped to Mexico.
every one of these trade treaties creates winners and loosers, we could probably prevent american manufacturing jobs from being shipped down there if we really wanted to, the cost savings are not really that much, but the conservatives have been the champions of deregulation that promote such activities
Why does Trump want to withdraw from NAFTA?
Because the US gets bent over and pounded by Mexico with it.
Can't you re-negotiate these agreements?
Because the US gets bent over and pounded by Mexico with it.
bent over and pounded in a way that nets us 30k jobs huh
It would cost my job. My main client is Takata, they manufacture airbags for car manufacturers.
I only ever heard bad things about NAFTA such as lowering our standards to US ones and having jobs shipped to Mexico.
It's been generally noted to have driven up wages for the majority of Americans but certain low skilled populations lose out.
It's been generally noted to have driven up wages for the majority of Americans but certain low skilled populations lose out.
The low skilled population lose out because they are not compensated in any way for their jobs being moved out of country. If the government didn't have its head up their ass and actually thought about helping these people get their kids into college or some sort of program to provide relief to those struggling with the loss of their bread and butter nobody would be bitching about NAFTA. Like, a fucking college grant for the children of laid off or unemployed workers in states that have had the harshest loss of manufacturing jobs.
I heard that the Canadian government was looking to re-negotiate NAFTA as well in the hope of getting a better deal on softwood lumber.
