Good job MS, you stabed yourself again: An Absolutely Terrifying Chart For Windows 8 sales
Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system is a flop.
This chart from Statista, based on data from Net Applications, shows that Windows 8 was used by just 9.3% of the computing population. At this point in Windows 7's life, it was twice as high in terms of computing share.
What's worse for Microsoft, notes Will Oremus at Slate, is that Windows 7 is still growing faster than Windows 8. It's not in this chart, but a recent report from Net Applications had Windows 8 market share growth of .05%, while Windows 7 grew .22%.
"In other words, Windows 8 is actually falling farther behind its own four-year-old predecessor even today," says Oremus.
This is really bad for Microsoft. Windows 8 was supposed to be the future of the company. It is deploying the look and feel of Windows 8 across the board — in Windows, in Windows Phone, and on Xbox.
If users are rejecting it for computing, what does that mean for all the other platforms?

For most people the differences between windows 7 and 8 won't really have a say.

See, this is what I said in the other thread about Windows.
Then perhaps [sp]though maybe I should not really be saying this in this thread[/sp], this is something that is going to encourage a switch to Linux, being the only free operating system that's already in use by people.
I like how there's all this damn market research, but it doesn't take a moron to realize that for the average person, Windows 8 is not worth $100+ when they already have Windows 7.
People are likely to move to other operating systems (most likely a Linux based system) because it's free and will never go the same way as Windows.
It´s nice but you can´t compare Linux and Windows. It´s like saying a pre-2000 Dacia against an same year Audi.

From using windows 8, the only functionality I can think of that the common person will get out of it is easier file searching.

Exactly, and with how controversial the Modern UI is, a lot of people aren't exactly seeking to spend $100+ to shoot themselves in the foot. (I like Modern UI, full disclosure, I just understand that a lot of people don't.)
People care more about how it looks and works and Windows 8 just ain't clicking with a lot of people.

I know. I replaced that comment with the quote I made in the other thread.
They should've just made Metro optional, IMO.
Windows 8 is excellent when you remove most of the Metro features.
I don't want my computer to be a fucked up looking tablet/phone.
No shit I am sticking with Windows 7.
On the topic of windows 7 though anyone know any good themes/mods for it? Just running default currently and I'm feeling adventurous.

I feel the opposite. I love the metro menu. I could never turn back to the start menu.
I love how they discontinued it because they wanted more W8 sales.
It's funny because they just ended Windows 7 retail sales
I feel the opposite. I love the metro menu. I could never turn back to the start menu.
Hence why I think it should've just been optional, MS basically divided all their customers when they introduced it.
It's not a bad menu, but for me it just feels awkward and clunky on a desktop.

MS will never learn.
Tbh. Its not microsofts fault that people hate change. The operating itself is fast as hell and has alot of improvements from windows 7. The UI is the only reason it isn't selling when it takes roughly 5-10 minutes to get use to. People just need to get use to the change. It isn't necessary hard to learn how to use metro at all.
Imagine if it started going down.

I find it funny that they refuse to implement the simplest solution to all the criticism.
Refresh the win7 shell with proper scaling for todays monitors and tone down the Aero and rounded corners, Then the complaints would be non-existent in comparison to now.

Try saying that to the 300+ Users on a business network. You can't just roll these changes out and expect people to get on with their job. The Enterprise market is exactly why this OS is failing.
Personally I bought 8 with every intention to use it ( And I did for a fair amount of time and my laptop still runs it), I've since reverted to 7:
The audio subsystem in 8 is RUBBISH
Firewire support is patchy at best
The new "start" screen is a distraction, Having my entire screen held hostage breaks my workflow.
And yes, I did buy Start8 in the hope I could make it usable for me.
If they don't make an OS suitable for me I will have to join the dark side and buy a mac, it's just a consequence of the job I do. I need stable firewire and audio support. 7 Provides this. 8 Does not.
Switching from XP to 7 resulted in a TON of improvements. Windows 8 needs to be unanimously better in every way if they want people to switch. That means bring back the option to use the start menu exactly the way it works in Windows 7.

When the w8 would be installed, it should tell you how does the new start menu works. Because it is fucking great (atleast i adjusted it just fine).
It's easy to adjust to if you're already tech savvy. I wouldn't expect my grandma who still runs a 1024x768 monitor with XP and a Pentium 4 to be able to navigate Windows 8.
I got 8 for various videogame related reasons and I don't even mind the new start menu, what I do mind on the other hand, is the even more annoying implementation of UAC (if it's off, it won't let you use "apps" or certain programs might misbehave (dropbox overlay won't work with UAC off) which really brings my piss to a boil).
Other than that it's a nice OS, faster than 7, the explorer is better, so is the task manager and file copy dialog

It only takes a few minutes of tweaks to get it back to looking like windows 7 though(True you shouldn't have to buy a modification to get the start menu back but still) I just did a few registry tweaks got rid of metro stuff got start8 and I was back to how windows 7 looked with no metro. The performance changes alone is enough to switch. I understand from a business point of view but from a personal point of view for personal use it isn't really something to bitch about.
I have a touchscreen laptop with W8 which I don't mind for the most part, but, secure boot needs to go fuck itself

Tell that to a computer illiterate person who has just bought a new computer that replaces a old WinXP wreck.
And your ears will fall off due to the amount of bitching that'll ensue.
Which could've been gracefully avoided if Microsoft gave the users the choice of a build in easy-to-enable/disable "classic" shell.

Isn't that why Microsoft lowered the price of upgrading to Windows 8 to $40 in the first months of launch?

I don't see how that analogy works, even if it is a car analogy.

It's not a business's fault that people don't like the product.
