Popular torrent release group YIFY and its official YTS website have shut down permanently, trusted sources have confirmed to TorrentFreak. The unexpected shutdown marks the end of an era that started at the turn of the decade. More information about the precise circumstances will become public in the near future.
Ten days ago the popular movie torrent site YTS stopped working.
The downtime raised concern among many BitTorrent users, not least because the site belongs to movie release group YIFY, which has dominated public BitTorrent sites for several years.
Today we can report that this reign has come to an end. YIFY and YTS have shutdown permanently, as predicted earlier this week.
A lot of information has been made available over the past several days and multiple sources have now confirmed that YTS and YIFY will not return. The entire operation has stopped which means that no new official YIFY movie releases will appear on any torrent site, anywhere.
TF has received additional explanatory details from trusted sources, but we have been asked not to reveal all of the information just yet. However, our sources confirm without doubt that the shutdown is permanent.
The operator of YTS/YIFY, meanwhile, remains silent.
The news marks the end of a remarkable era. YIFY first arrived on the scene in 2010 and the group has shared over 6,000 releases since.
Well... good night, sweet prince. You had a good run.

I still remember fondly aXXo's XviD rips... Pepperidge farm remembers.
A moment of silence for one of the most reliable sources there were.

There's always SPARKS...
RIP
I now use Netflix.
I salute thee for thine service!
The amount of YIFY-tagged downloads I've seen on people's laptops...it's been good while it lasted, I guess.
Thank fucking god, yify was complete shit
How was yify shit? It had HD movies with a very small file size, and a very large selection of movies
"HD" movies with such a low bitrate and the worst audio available that the only thing HD about them is the resolution
Yeah, wasn't the quality of YIFY releases kinda shit in order to keep filesize down? I mean it was good if you didn't want to download a huge release in 1080p, but there were releases woth a lot better quality. Still, shame they're shutting down.
How was yify shit? It had HD movies with a very small file size, and a very large selection of movies
Theyre a very small size for an awful reason
Main good thing about YIFY was certainly not the quality, but that I could find trustworthy sources of even really old movies.
Shame.
yify was the best for people who didn't have 90 inch computer screens with ten thousand dollars worth of audio equipment
nobody wants to download 50gb for just one fucking movie that has pretty much the same exact quality as a 1.1gb one with the only difference being really irrelevant and barely noticeable bitrate changes and slightly compressed audio

You must have terrible vision and hearing then
You must have terrible vision and hearing then
Or maybe some people watch the movie for the movie's sake and not the location of every hair on the actors' faces nor hearing them smack their lips in perfect clarity
Are people really quality shaming here? That's just strange.

You don't need to download 50gb, even just doubling the filesize will pretty much double the quality. I'd much rather download an extra few gigs for much higher quality audio/video.
Not that I do of course.
Or maybe some people watch the movie for the movie's sake and not the location of every hair on the actors' faces nor hearing them smack their lips in perfect clarity
Its not a case of wanting to see every hair, its a case of not wanting to have awful banding everywhere especially if there was a dark scene, and having decent audio clarity. Why does it have to be one or the other? Why dont you want to watch a movie in a decent quality for a better experience at the cost of a marginally bigger file size?
Or maybe some people watch the movie for the movie's sake and not the location of every hair on the actors' faces nor hearing them smack their lips in perfect clarity
It's not about having every intricate detail being clearly visible, it's just that the quality of these releases look so bad it's actually distracting and can put you off on even some of the most well made movies. Especially given the fact that a movie is a visual medium, it's really an important factor to watch a movie at a decent quality to really appreciate the camerawork, makeup, visual design, script and everything else. Alternatives to YIFY are only about 5-10% larger usually and won't really take a toll on anyone's data caps or storage space and is usually worth the trade off.
Here's some comparisons for YIFY faithfuls

As someone who religiously visits the cinemas for the experience, I don't understand people who are anal about absolute quality & perfection.. Seriously, just get lost in the story.

Because dozens, maybe hundreds, of people worked tirelessly to make the movie look as good as it possibly can and I want to experience it as closely to how they intended as I can. Not watch it with vaseline on my eyes.
But I'm a film fan so I can understand other people not really giving a fuck.

This barely holds as you don't notice that shit while watching, unless you watch to notice.

I absolutely notice. I'm also one of the people who notice the rainbow effect with DLP projectors. It's a curse.

Then YIFY was obviously not for you, but why diss people who are not that picky?
Then YIFY was obviously not for you, but why diss people who are not that picky?
I'm not dissing I'm just informing that there are better options out there. Especially since now YIFY is gone and people are looking for another reliable source.
YIFY encodes were really shitty for anything other than just watching a movie.
Even searching a forum I browse, it's been kind of accepted that their quality was not the greatest. They're fine for watching, but for a good movie like TRON or otherwise, not worth downloading imo

The main thing I noticed was the audio, it was really really quiet for their releases and you'd turn you tv up to around 40 and action scenes were loud as fuck compared to everything else.. really weird rips.
Good. It's fucking inexcusable to lower your bitrate halfway through a file

Because the nature of P2P meant the existence of (widely-available, centralized, well-known) YIFY rips meant that better rips were less seeded and therefore less available. I hope that now that tech in general has advanced we can settle for at least 5-10 GB rips in whatever solution becomes popular now.
Aren't the vast majority of movies on Popcorn Time from YIFY?
Wonder where they'll get their movies from now.
As for if YIFY is good or not, they really aren't, but most of the time, you wouldn't notice that many imperfections unless you just stopped the movie and looked (except for the color issues). It's like people complaining about the occasional shitty art/animation in like 3 frames of an episode for an anime when everything else is relatively solid.

There's plenty of massive direct rips out there. If you use something that can search directly in various swarms of DHT, you'll find a lot of good stuff (and a fuckton of the fucking worst).
But for most people, "decent" is good enough. Even if it is shit to people who give a shit, for those who don't it's usually fine. People are different. It can't be that hard to comprehend.

Not the vast majority. All of them. Popcorn Time hooked directly into YIFY to gain access to these kinds of information. It would still play things from bittorrent or magnet links just fine.
There's still things like Peerflix (for the non-average technical user) and Tribler.
