Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”
The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.
Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”
The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”
Rep. Hal Wick, R-Sioux Falls, is sponsoring the bill and knows it will be killed. But he said he is introducing it to prove a point that the federal health care reform mandate passed last year is unconstitutional.
“Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not. But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance,” he said.
hurr and durr
So this is now two fruitless wastes of time that we can credit the republicans with
God bless America
Silly republicans
This is a great idea~ A gun is something every American needs, mandatory health care~ however is not~
Introducing a bill for the sole purpose of mockery?
Grow the fuck up, you're fucking politicians for fucks sake.

Really, you couldn't have just said
"we don't want healthcare"
What a fantastic waste of the public's money. Thanks a lot.
Thank god we have universal health care to take care of all the gunshot victims.
Snipped because FP is too dumb to pick up on sarcasm.

How is not wanting to be forced to buy a product by the government from a third party company equal to not wanting healthcare?

Also it isn't like they have anything better to do, South Dakota has only like 800k people in it
Also it isn't like they have anything better to do, South Dakota has only like 800k people in it
I like it like that.
It doesn't say anywhere that it is to mock the new healthcare (healthcare that every other western nation has). Yet I personally think this will reduce gun crime, no one would be able to pull off a murder or a robbery without considerable risk. I don't think it's right to make people have guns though.
Scratch that
I'm fucking blind, it does

Dude, it's South Dakota, they have literally nothing to spend their money on other than their highways due to the lack of people
Instruments of death = a centralized system to prevent death
Are you fucking serious?
Seriously, where the fuck is the parallel here?
As much as you want to deny it, guns don't kill people. People do. Guns just make it easier.
Dude, it's South Dakota, they have literally nothing to spend their money on other than their highways due to the lack of people
Couldn't they spend it on something useful instead? Buy prostitutes for every adult over the age of 21 or something.
Wow, it's like they're forcing the Second Amendment on South Dakotans. Instead of "every citizen has the right to bear arms", it's "every citizen has to bear arms", at least that's what South Dakota appears to be planning...
It'll likely get shot down like a paper duck, though.

Guns to death are like Automobiles to walking.

more like Instruments to protect from death = a centralized system to prevent death
I agree with what you said, just don't think guns are a killing tool. Think of it more as a protection tool
Damn the conservatives and damn the liberals.

people may laugh at this post now but when the communists, nazis, UN, gays, muslims and jews launch their multipronged assault on america it won't be funny anymore now will it
it's so weird that a bunch of kids and young adults on an internet forum have generally left wing opinions.
Also, I don't see the problem with a bill like this as long as it's on a state level, but I think it should be changed to let people carry less than lethal weapons instead like tasers, mace, et cetera.
Also, how are the open carry laws in South Dakota? Unless you wear a hoodie or leather jacket fucking everywhere, which isn't very practical in the summer, a concealed gun is useless for self defense.

Which is the entire fucking point of this bill, to show that if the Government can force private companies on to the people, the state has the right to force a constitutional right onto the people

Obamacare doesn't centralize shit, it forces people to buy from insurance companies which already hold monopolies in most states without it

Tasers and mace are at least 10 times more dangerous to operate than a Firearm due to the fact Tasers need both prongs to land on target with no reload possible, and mace only angering the person attacking you and/or the wind blowing it back into your face
:bravo:
more like Instruments to protect from death = a centralized system to prevent death
No, guns are tools used for ranged killing. That's their exact purpose, whether those killings are good or not is up to the user. In fact when using a gun to "protect from death" somebody is still getting killed.

that fucker deserved to die. there's a big dif between a criminal killing someone and shooting a black man that got onto my property

good point, but there's a lot of people who would much rather die than kill someone else. Actually, now that I think about it, a more reasonable way to unironically approach something like this would be to just give people a tax benefit for taking a self-defense course and initiate a program to help low-income families install security systems in their houses (if they want them, of course.)
