I'm sitting here on my HTC Hero, just texting and stuff, and then I realized something. Almost every 5 minutes, my battery went down by one. I wonder if there is any way to extend the life of the battery (I already have the brightness set to very low).
Turn off WiFi, GPS, 3G, use JuiceDefender, the list goes on and on.
JuiceDefender sounds good. I'll look into it.

task killers are really only useful if you've got apps that don't work right.
anyway OP, after flashing CM6 onto my phone I stopped having terrible battery life, so you could try a different rom. but that would void your warranty. pick which one is more important to you.

Android is a big boy and can handle that itself.
Maybe it's time for a newer phone? My G1 had pretty pathetic battery life, but my Nexus One seems to last forever.

If you break the phone and need to use the warranty, just unroot it and return to stock. They won't know anything happened.

my G1's battery is lasting about 8 hours now before it needs to be plugged in.

I've been looking at some, but I just got this one about a month ago, so it seems too soon for me and my little buddy to separate :smith:

That's not long at all. O_O; My EVO 4G phone would last 4 days without needing charged.

Weird, since my nokia 5110 has held its roughly two week battery life and it's been twelve years since i got that phone

yeah man it's weird that your dumb phone that doesn't communicate with data towers and doesn't do anything while not receiving a text or phone call has a long battery life
it's a mystery for sure
The battery indicator is kind of erratic. While texting, calling, using wifi, etc your battery level will plummet. Put your phone in to sleep for a while and it'll fill up again. It must try and give you an estimate based on how you're currently using the phone.
JuiceDefender has the most horrid UI I've ever seen.

I was just pointing the fact that the battery in that has kept its general charge for twelve years now, not the battery life itself
Root your phone, uninstall stock apps that stay running 24/7 that you don't use. Every once in a while check your processes and running apps to see if there are any offenders, and correct it.
Google "GSM Auto PRL". It is the single most important improvement you can make for battery life.
Seriously.

Do not listen to this.
Closing processes only cause them to be reopened again and actually eat up more battery life. Android is not like Windows or Mac OS X.

you missed where it said uninstall
you missed where it said uninstall
And you're not understanding that Android is not like a desktop OS.
A process can run 24/7 and use absolutely negligible amounts of battery life. You're trying to Black Viper Android, and that's completely unnecessary.
Running root has lots of awesome things, but this will not significantly improve your battery life.

what? I never said any of that. I think that task killers should only be used to kill that occasional poorly coded and erratic app that eats up all your CPU time.
and uninstalling useless things (ie amazon mp3 or some run-once helper app) not only frees up memory but frees up disk space so you can install apps that you might actually use every once in a while.

Running root won't, but making less tasks run will. Trust me, I went from having about 14 hours of battery life to probably around 3 days, with a Droid running at 1100 mhz (default is 600).
[editline]15th October 2010[/editline]
And the only reason I mentioned root is because it's required to remove apps that came with your rom.
JuiceDefender makes my phone slow as fuck, it's horrible.
HTC Desire, 1400 mAh battery

Underclocked

Undervolted

Autoswitch to 2g after 30 minutes of no usage

WiFi generally off
With nothing but trillian in background and no heavy usage (few texting), it lasts 2-3 days. Still I charge it every day so I can have maximum battery when I need it. E.g. for online-radio via HSDPA, which drains much.
My suggestion to extend the battery life is using undervolting and underclocking. Also: Do not use a task killer. This is bad because everytime you kill a task, it needs to load totally from scratch which eats more battery than leaving it IDLE and not doing anything in background.

My Blackberry 9700 can go several days without needing to be charged. And this is constantly connected to data, receiving emails, phone calls and texts. Also browsing the web and streaming music. I could EASILY make it through the weekend without charging it and using it heavily.
The only thing that kills my battery is the giant light on the back for the Camera.

is that standby or full work
is that standby or full work
This. A phone can easily last several days just sitting idle (if it doesn't, there is a real problem). Actually using the phone is another matter.
