A patient in Essex has become the first person in the UK without underlying health problems to die of swine flu. NHS East of England said the victim died at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital on Friday. A spokesman said the hospital trust "would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family affected as they come to terms with their loss". On Thursday the government said 14 people were thought to have died in the UK after contracting swine flu. England's chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson said not all of those had died as a direct result of swine flu but they had all had the virus. Of the 14 deaths, 12 occurred in England and two in Scotland The number of swine flu cases in London and the West Midlands was approaching epidemic levels, he added. At the request of the patient's family no further details about the latest victim will be released by the health service. BBC News health correspondent Branwen Jeffreys said: "This was someone with no previous health problems, but not perhaps surprising. "Although this flu virus has been fairly mild in most people there is always the possibility with flu that it can be a severe illness." Dr Andrea Atherton, director of public health for NHS South East Essex, said: "We would like to reassure people that the risk of transmission still remains small. "It is important to stress that the symptoms of swine flu are, relatively speaking, mild. "Unless you have flu-like symptoms and are being tested for swine flu, there is absolutely no need to stop your normal everyday activities." Two people in Canvey Island are being treated for a mild form of swine flu and the East of England has seen 14 cases overall, a spokeswoman said.
Gas masks at the ready fokes!
This may be a sign that the virus is mutating. Hopefully it won't get too bad.
This may be a sign that the virus is mutating. Hopefully it won't get too bad.
eh zombies
There have been a couple of confirmed cases in my town, most of whom have now be hospitalised. If I don't make it through the summer, I just want everyone to know that I hate you all and I will see you in hell.
This may be a sign that the virus is mutating. Hopefully it won't get too bad.
Flus always worsen in the fall.
My caring meter is still in the same level it was with the birdflu. That's pretty god damn low.
Shit's going to go down.
Was it an old person? Or maybe an infant?
Just another additional nuisance disease, you'll have to either wait to catch it or get vaccination whenever it comes out because it is only mild at the moment and countries just seem to be "business as usual".

Imagine what will happen if this breaks out.
Law of averages. Anywho, I went to visit a swine flu stricken friend and ate some cake with him and I didn't even catch the blasted 'flu!
TO Madagascar!
OH GOD WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE ABANDON ALL HOPE!!!!! :derp: etc etc
if there were no underlying causes maybe the person just had a shitty immune system everyone will react to the flu differently, the normal flu can also kill people who are "just fine"
1 guy out of THOUSANDS OF CASES - WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!?>!111
Vaccines rarely work, by the time you get sick the strain has already mutated.
TO Madagascar!
Quick, before they close their port!
Isn't there meant to be a vaccine before the end of the year? In which case I don't give half a shit, hell, not even quarter. But an eighth I'd have to say I do.

My college has got some cases... Good job my course is finished :P
So I was reading Wikipedia
The government announced that there are now over 9,000 cases of Swine flu in the UK causing 14 deaths, 2 of them in Scotland and the remaining 12 of them in England; 5 of the 14 deaths have occured in London.
Spot the meme.

Only shots required to be in school.
The person was probably very young or old
1 guy out of THOUSANDS OF CASES - WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!?>!111
That's what they were saying when the first ever swine flu death was confirmed.
i used to joke about it, then i got scared, but then i joked about it some more, now i'm shitting myself 0.0
They left out the most critical part in the article, the age.
Most likely the NHS haven't published the age/identity out of respect for the family.
My friend mum has swine flu, so do a few other people including my brothers best friend. They're all still alive, so it's not the end of the world if you do get it.
I bet there was some reason or other. Maybe the guy was simply a wimp or maybe he got it harder than everyone else or something.
Most likely the NHS haven't published the age/identity out of respect for the family.
I don't think telling the age would be disrespectful.
