Sega, then the leading video game manufacturer in the U.S. in Europe -- and planning, according to a Wired article that year, to "take over the world" -- had a longstanding relationship with Jackson. In 1990, the company had released "Moonwalker," a game based on a Jackson movie. In it, players danced their way across a beat-'em-up game world, fighting bad guys and saving children. Then, in 1991, Sega debuted "Sonic the Hedgehog," which would become its marquee franchise. Sonic 2 came out the following year. Jackson was smitten. And so, late one afternoon, Roger Hector got a call: Jackson would be coming to visit Sega. "He wanted to drop by and say hello," Hector recalls. "There was no agenda beyond it other than, he really, really liked the game. He enjoyed playing it a lot and he wanted to meet the people behind it."

Jackson toured the facility. "He didn't moonwalk," Hector said. "He was walking around on crutches and he was apologetic about that -- he said 'I'm really sorry' and all that. But he didn't have to apologize. We were just happy to have him." Then, as Hector tells it, one of the Sonic 3 developers asked whether Jackson would like to write the music for the new game. What happened next is still in dispute. Here's what we know: A few months after Jackson's Sega visit, a Bronx-born dentist and screenwriter named Evan Chandler accused Jackson of molesting Chandler's 13-year-old son. Jackson, humiliated and facing a grand jury investigation, canceled the rest of his tour. As Jackson biographer Joe Vogel detailed, companies such as Pepsi began to drop Jackson from endorsement deals. Sega maintains it never worked with Jackson on Sonic 3, and is "not in the position to respond" to questions about allegations to the contrary. "We have nothing to comment on the case," the company said. But the men whom Sega credited with writing the music say otherwise. Six men -- Brad Buxer, Bobby Brooks, Doug Grigsby III, Darryl Ross, Geoff Grace and Cirocco Jones -- are listed as songwriters in Sonic 3's endgame scroll. Buxer, Grigsby and Jones tell The Huffington Post that Jackson worked with them on a soundtrack for Sonic 3 -- and that the music they created with Jackson ended up in the final product. "It was really, really, really cool how they put what we did together in there," Grigsby says.

When Jackson recorded, he'd usually have a side room – a lounge or relaxation area – where he could take a break and kick back. Sometimes he'd play Sonic games. "None of us involved in this were really gamers," Matt Forger, a sound engineer who worked on the project, told me. "Michael was probably the one who did play video games to the greatest extent. So, for the rest of us, we knew Sonic the Hedgehog, that was a pretty well-known thing in terms of popular culture, and video games in general, but Michael really is the core."
There's tons of more info in the article link http://testkitchen.huffingtonpost.com/michaeljacksonsonic/
Well every song except Ice Cap Zone, that one was Hard Times by The Jetzons
I wonder if this could cause a legal battle for royalties in the near future.
I would not have guessed that MJ was a gamer, let alone a huge Sonic fan.
I wonder if this could cause a legal battle for royalties in the near future.
Theoretically SEGA could go the route of future versions of Sonic 3 using the PC version's replacements for the Jackson/Jetzons-influenced tracks. The Sonic 3 Complete romhack even allows for you to choose Genesis-ized versions of those songs for playthroughs. I can't remember if SEGA is completely refusing to have Sonic 3 remastered because of the royalty complications or because they felt it wasn't worth the time, effort and money (mind you those remasters are being done entirely by Taxman/Christan Whitehead and Stealth of the Sonic community).
I would not have guessed that MJ was a gamer, let alone a huge Sonic fan.
i think he was just a sega fan in particular especially in space channel 5 part 2 as he appeared in the game as "Space Micheal" and had a entire mission dedicated to saving his ass. at 5:40
I would not have guessed that MJ was a gamer, let alone a huge Sonic fan.
if i remember correctly, mj actually called sega japan and requested to be in space channel 5 there's a character literally named "space michael" in space channel 5 that looks like him and is also voiced by him edit: ninja'd
didnt mj really end up hating it because of the sound chip inside it? Or is that a myth
didnt mj really end up hating it because of the sound chip inside it? Or is that a myth
in the article it says he wanted his name off the box because he didn't like the compression.
didnt mj really end up hating it because of the sound chip inside it? Or is that a myth
That's brought up in the article, two claimed reasons for his name getting cut off from the game were the child molestation charges at the time and him not being entirely happy with the sound chip's quality overall for the music.
aren't we forgetting the most obvious ?!
Wait a second... Michael Jackson was the biggest gamer on Sonic Team during the production of Sonic 3? What?
i think he was just a sega fan in particular especially in space channel 5 part 2 as he appeared in the game as "Space Micheal" and had a entire mission dedicated to saving his ass. at 5:40
Also Michael Jackson's Moonwalker which was exclusive to Sega consoles and the arcade machines were made by Sega. [editline]26th January 2016[/editline] As for the article, I am a huge MJ fan and the general belief in the fan community is that he did not compose the music. All MJ-styled pieces were made by Brad Buxer
Wait a second... Michael Jackson was the biggest gamer on Sonic Team during the production of Sonic 3? What?
Of the sound team, it seems.
Well every song except Ice Cap Zone, that one was Hard Times by The Jetzons
Ice Cap was one of my favorite tracks in the game, and I while I had heard of MJ's involvement finding out that Brad Buxer straight up added one of his songs in the game it blew my mind.

I always thought this was just a myth based on the coincidence of the music sounding like Michael Jackson's work while having a cameo in Space Channel 5. Great to know now that it was confirmed.
I would not have guessed that MJ was a gamer, let alone a huge Sonic fan.
He even had his own private arcade, it's pretty awesome http://www.pinsane2.com/pinorama/events/MJ_09/kr/michael_jackson_arcade_entry.html
i don't see how this confirms it any more than it's currently considered to be "confirmed." SEGA still hasn't admitted it so it's not officially confirmed, and the jackson camp has been saying his stuff is in it for years. edit: [del] nothing in this isn't already been known, as far as i can tell. [/del] nevermind, there's a couple new comments from the jackson camp about his music being in the game, and drossin saying it's not all gone. other than that, this is all pretty much old news.
does that mean he worked on the "& Knuckles" portion of Sonic 3 as well? Those had my favorite tracks on it. (Mushroom Hill Zone & up)
does that mean he worked on the "& Knuckles" portion of Sonic 3 as well? Those had my favorite tracks on it. (Mushroom Hill Zone & up)
IIRC, & Knuckles is all non-jackson. that's why it replaces a lot of music from sonic 3 standalone, like knuckles' theme and act 1 boss music.
Did he also do the Sega PC version music?
That one documentary somebody made ages ago about MJ's involvement in Sonic 3 is still one of the most fascinating things out there. I wonder if it's time for an updated version, with all the new info and all.
Did he also do the Sega PC version music?
No, that's probably why they rewrote the most Michael-y songs for the collection in 1999. I grew up with this version more and actually prefer it.
Can't wait to see what he comes up with!

This explains why Hydrocity Zone is one of my favorites.
This explains why Hydrocity Zone is one of my favorites.
Actually Hyrdrocity zone wasn't one of the zones Michael worked on. In fact, the ones that Michael's team worked on were: - Carnival Night Zone - Ice Cap Zone - Launch Base Zone - Act 1 Boss S3 / Knuckle's Theme - Competition Menu - Sonic 3 credits
