A man who was shot and killed by police on Long Island after he crashed his truck and opened fire on paramedics was armed with enough weaponry to commit a mass killing, according to police.
Police discovered the disturbing arsenal after a Ford truck hit a utility pole in Bellmore about 10 p.m. Tuesday, downing wires and knocking out electricity in the neighborhood. The driver, identified by an official with knowledge of the investigation as 31-year-old Jason Beller, opened fire on emergency personnel responding to the accident, injuring one paramedic.
"It is clear to us that this man was out to create mayhem somewhere in this county last night," Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey said on Wednesday. "He happened to run into that pole and he committed that mayhem on this young firefighter and attempted to commit it on police officers."
Mr. Beller, of Commack, used an SKS 7 rifle with a pistol grip, banana ammunition clip and a green laser scope to fire at least eight shots at paramedics and police officers during the gunfight. Mr. Mulvey said the shooter had another rifle strapped across his chest and wore a sleeve on his arm made to hold ammunition.
After he was killed, officers found more weapons: a handgun in his lap, a Tech-9 submachine gun on the floor behind the passenger seat, and two other firearms inside the truck. Beer, including an open can, and prescription drugs were also found in the truck.
Police were still trying to puzzle out Mr. Beller's motive.
Mr. Mulvey said the man in the truck, whom he did not identify, moved to Long Island from Florida within the past year, was married with a child and possibly worked in a trade union. A computer search shows that Mr. Beller was arrested nine times between 2004 and 2009, all for petty crimes.
His father is a Manhattan oral surgeon with offices on Central Park South.
The commissioner said the shooter apparently had "turmoil in his personal life" but he did not explain further.
Justin Angell, a 20-year-old volunteer emergency medical technician with the Bellmore Fire Department, was injured as he arrived in an ambulance driven by his brother, Dean.
As Mr. Angell walked toward the accident, he heard explosions and assumed a transformer on the light pole was exploding, according to David Denenberg, a Nassau County legislator who is friendly with the Angell family.
"He didn't know what happened," Mr. Denenberg said. "He felt pain. Then he retreated."
Shot through the side of his stomach, Mr. Angell stumbled behind the ambulance and collapsed on a front lawn.
A Nassau County police officer assigned to the K-9 unit arrived moments later, saw a green laser beam trained on him and scrambled out of his police cruiser. Two other officers arrived, saw the laser beam, and took cover behind their cars. As the officers traded gunfire with Mr. Beller, the K-9 cop snuck up to the truck and shot him, said Mr. Mulvey. The incident lasted less than two minutes, officials said. The commissioner did not release the names of the officers involved.
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano called the shooter "a deranged human being—to attack someone who is coming to your aid."
Mr. Denenberg said Mr. Angell was expected to be released from Nassau University Medical Center.
Nick Tedesco, a 48-year-old electrician who lives next door to Mr. Beller's home, said Mr. Beller told him he was a crane operator in Florida and moved to Long Island looking for work.

Well it's pretty good that the police managed to stop a mass killing this time.

I agree, it makes sense because in GTA you can do exactly the same thing, so that's where he got it from. Why don't we just ban video games? There would be no more gun related violence. It makes perfect sense.
