I've been using a 10,000rpm 74gb raptor drive for the last few years and it's served me well. However I'm getting sick of having to delete shit to get new shit so I want a new 1tb or similar drive.
What's fast and reliable like my old drive for not too much money?
are you going to use the raptor for high end games while the spin point for storage?
I don't play games so that doesn't matter. I'll leave windows in the raptor and yeah the other drive will be for storage.
that's pretty cheap, i want to spend about £100 so that's like $160 to play with.
Should i just get one of those then

Yeah. Spinpoint F3s are only $70 in the USA. So I think they would be around $80 in the UK? But thats just a guess.

You don't have to spend all the money in your budget, you know. Spinpoint F3s are one of the best drives you can get.
if you want to use more of your budget and want more of a guarantee of reliability you could get two and put them in raid 1
not really worth it though
IIRC Spinpoint F3 1TB's are as fast as Raptors.
Really? I thought they were at about the speed of a WDC Black

Nope, 130Mb read/write.

No, they write at totally different speeds, a raptor has 130mb write, a spinpoint does not.
Yep just double checked the new F3's are faster than the original Raptors, and on par with the new ones in everything except access times.
So this one then?

40 quid! that's cheap as fuck. My first harddrive had 8mb on it and cost 150 quid.
Nice one gentlemen.

Then why do raptors need those enormous heat sinks around them? I don't understand.

Because they are 2.5" and they needed a way of making them fit into a regular 3.5" drive bay.
