If you've got a cause that interests them then it might work, a relative of mine recently got given funds by John Hurt just by writing a short letter to him to pursue an acting/theatre course
Problem with asking for money from a rich person is that you'd first need to be a very sad case. Even sadder than the millions of other sad people.
Because this person obviously can't give money to some random sad person, otherwise his money would be worthless as he would not even be able to give enough money to everyone to make a phone call with.
