I've been getting into steampunk lately so I thought I should try to modify one of the two pairs of welding goggles I have laying around. I went walking around a Wal-Mart and a Hobby Lobby for things to add. Long story short the project ended up turning into making a pair of goggles completely from scratch.
Material used:
-Old leather belt
-Some pipe caps found in the plumbing section of Wal-Mart
-Paper Clips (Used to fasten the strap to the goggles)
-Picture Frame wall hangars
-Gorilla Glue
Here's how far I've gotten.

These are meant purly for aesthetic purposes so the goggle to the right in the picture will not remain see through. I'm trying to think of what to do with it.
I've bought one of these on ebay so it should get here in about a week.

I'm still working on them so expect updates on progress.
Open to criticism and suggestions.
Those look FANTASTIC, i've been wanting to do a pair of these for some time now, i think i might start soon :v:
The whole thing true steampunkists go after is fashion and functionality (at least plausible functionality) so sticking gears and clocks in uncomfortable places (like the right eye) doesnt quite work so well, but, if you maybe took a tiny clock and put in one of the lenses of that flip down eyepeice facing towards you - Like it was just something you flip down to check the time and then flip back up - it would be better. Also you definitely have the leather - black - brass palette working well, maybe on your next project brighten up the colors a little (dark brown for black, lighter brass, etc)
hope you can see through a clock
Yeah, they were my first ever attempt at making something like this so I didn't care much about functionality. I'm definitely going to go for both appearance and functionality for the next pair.
Alright. I've started making a second pair.

Sorry if it's difficult to see.
I'm liking how these are turning out more that the original.
Any suggestions on what to use for lenses.
Nice brass rivets.
also what do you use to get the pvc that brass color?
If you arent using Rub n Buff i suggest you do, it clings to everything with even the finest sanding and looks amazing..
I was just using the same acrylic paints I use for my 40k miniatures. But I'll look into this Rub n Buff.
What color would you suggest?
I think autumn gold would do fine.

Try using fine wire mesh a la airsoft masks and see how it turns out. Shouldn't be too hard to scrap if it doesn't look that great.
I might try that.

Autumn gold for copper
Jade for Brass
gold leaf for gold (obviously
Personally i like my stuff more brass than copper so i like the jade color.
also protip: You only need the slightest amount of that stuff, dont glob it on or you'll have alot of wasted extra.
I would have loved to get autumn gold but the local stores only had antique gold. Hopefully that would work over a black basecoat of paint.
Also, I bought some cheap things to test out felt hat making. Polyester felt and styrofoam to make the hat-block. If I like it then I will look into buying a hat-block and wool felt. That should be fun also.
Going to try to make either a bowler or a top hat.
This stuff is great.

Though I'm probably going to go back over it.
It's looking pretty freaking awesome, keep it up.
Thanks.
Lovin' this, can't wait to see more from you.
I await the hat.
I finally got around to carving a bowler hat block. I should be able to post WIP shots later.
[editline]when[/editline]
Won't be making a hat currently. I found out that you can't use polyester felt.
I haven't visited this section in a long time and the first thing I see is this, fucking awesome!
Avatar suprizingly fits.
I won a friendly competition about "Who has the most hats in real life". I sent them this picture.

Asshats don't count.
This is great, im actually planning on making my own.
Any tips?
Same here, making a steampunk soldier costume, and I'm almost done with the body armor, and I'm now moving on to the hat and goggles.
