The real reason that it was canceled: every time the studio would play test it, one of the QA testers would die and all the code would be deleted.
How to completely miss what makes permadeath exciting or good.
Seems like the sort of gimmick that could work for a newgrounds flash game, not the sort of thing I would ever pay money for.
Does anyone know how the "perma-permadeath" functions?
To summarize based on what I understand, the game only have one 8-man server. That means at any point of time, only eight people can play the game. If they die, that's it, another set of players rotate in. It is designed to be a "spectator-gladiator" game, where the primary interaction is by spectating the active players, while doing so they gain resources which they can then collab with other spectators to try and screw the players over. It is definitely a novel concept, imagine "twitch plays".
I do not know what the game's business model is. Anywho, I wouldn't celebrate any game's demise.

Apparently some of the features planned for the game were the "ability to spend real money to purchase items for the player, or to drop monsters on them" which were described as monetized trolling
I guess the devs just wanted a "twitch chat spends money to troll the player"-The Game, which I can't imagine would have gotten too popular..

8 players can log it at once, and only one is playing at a time. I think it was mostly designed to be spectated rather than actually played.

Is it...? I honestly can't imagine the game possibly heading towards any financial success unless they get buttload of sponsors.

Nobody wants to sponsor a game that won't make any money, which is why I think it was canceled.
When I hear "perma-permadeath" I imagine when you die the game uninstalls itself, removes itself from your library, and you can't buy it again

You just described exactly why it would have been popular.
Don't have to make perma-death 'PERMANENT', just give players 1 life a month.
Tangible risk without being blatant money consumption.

you die in game you die in real life.

I think once a day would actually be a pretty decent model
This actually sounds like a neat experimental idea. From what I'm reading only 8 people can play the game at a time and if you die, you're out forever. Really interesting premise, I think. Almost like a gameshow.
The gameplay itself didn't look that fun though and if you only have 8 people a day then the vast majority of people are probably never going to get to play it, among other flaws. Still, I'd be interested in giving a properly realized concept like this a shot.

Though that's basically Daily Challenges in rogue-lites.

I would, this was a terrible idea and not worth wasting talent on. I'm glad they moved onto making something else.
Like yeah let's make a game that's impossible to play in the first place because there's only one server with a capacity of 8 but if you somehow manage to get into the single server you're good until you die and then bam you can never play again
Of course nobody's going to fund this.

I'm not sure it's worth making a full unique game based on the concept, but like, imagine a twitch stream where melee/smash 4 or something is constantly running in a 4-8 player match and you can enter a queue to be put into the game. If you lose, you're eliminated, your spot is freed up for the next guy, and you can never enter the running again. The only goal is to try to last as long as possible in front of an audience, a sort of king of the hill thing.
I think it's a neat idea, at least. It'd be tense.

Although their reasoning was attributed to mismanagement, and while I do feel like the game do have potential with possible number tweaks, I suppose it is for the best that they let go rather than to drown with it.
Aw, I thought this was pretty neat. Though I agree with what others have said that NEVER playing again was a bit much.
