Rustler Jailed For 99 Years For Stealing Herd Of 400
A DIE-HARD cattle rustler, with a record of theft spanning a decade, has been jailed for 99 years in America after swindling a rancher of his herd.
Carl Wade Curry, 44, from Athens, Texas, was found guilty of stealing 400 cows worth more than $200,000 (£122,000) last year.
District attorney Staley Heatly said Curry placed an order with a Mississippi man using a fake name and cattle company in Vernon, where the owner shipped the cows.
The owner contacted authorities when he did not receive payment.
A jury in Hardeman County took less than 30 minutes to both convict and sentence Curry. In the deal Curry used the name Earnest Jackson.
"He was going to mail me a cheque and he didn't," rancher David Sanders of Starkville, Mississippi, said. "Then he was going to Federal Express it to me. Didn't happen."
Mr Sanders had already shipped the cattle to a non-existent address in Hardeman County.
When Mr Sanders did not get paid he called the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. A special ranger with the association located the animals before they were sold.
"They really put their noses to the grindstone and got this guy good," Mr Sanders said.

He should have killed the owner of cattle first, and then taken them.
Seriously, 99 years is unbelievable.
Well, he does deserve jail time, but I don't think 99 years is worth $200,000, not even close.
A person's life for a bunch of cows?
This is just like red dead redemption!
How the hell do you lose 400 cows.
How the hell do you lose 400 cows.
He did not lose them, he sold them to the guy and didn't receive any payment.
How the hell do you lose 400 cows.
-snip- I see now.
Maybe he's up for parole at about 10 years?
Anyway it's still a very long time the 99 years, but then again the theft was pretty serious too. Cows are livestock, they play an important part in the economics so I guess that counts somewhat.
How the hell do you lose 400 cows.
You lose 400 cows by someone else stealing them.
"Hey there pretty boy, I raped, killed, and burned a family of four, not necessarily in that order. What are you in for?"
"I stole a bunch of cows"
Technically in Texas you can still be hung for stealing cattle and such.
This is a light sentence, he is lucky.
No seriously though, yeah it is bad to steal we all get that but 99 years? I don't even think the guy that did that whole pyramid scheme got that much time.
I decided to look up cattle rustling in Canada's Criminal Code for shits and giggles, because everyone knows it used to be a huge deal and probably hasn't been changed in the laws.
[release]Fraudulently taking cattle or defacing brand
338.(1) Every one who, without the consent of the owner,
(a) fraudulently takes, holds, keeps in his possession, conceals, receives, appropriates, purchases or sells cattle that are found astray, or
(b) fraudulently, in whole or in part,
(i) obliterates, alters or defaces a brand or mark on cattle, or
(ii) makes a false or counterfeit brand or mark on cattle,
is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.[/release]
Oh okay we're sane
Does he have any past offenses, could be a repeat offender.

is it really that hard to read the first sentence of the article
A life sentence for any kind of theft that involves no bodily harm whatsoever is insane.
How long did Bernie Maddoff get again?

C'mon people, is it that hard to read the first line of the topic? If you've been pulling this shit for a decade, eventually they're going to just toss you away for it. This is a pretty serious crime we're talking about.

99 YEARS FOR THEFT
It is probably going to cost the state more than if his theft to house him that long.

Wow I totally missed it no need to be such a dick.

He could have been raping people for a decade and got off lighter if he was rich enough

99 years for theft (after being charged for theft multiple times in the past). It isn't like he stole a car, he stole 400 cows from a rancher, who are dependent on these animals to make a living.

I'm dependant on my legs to make a living but if someone cut them off they wouldn't get 99 years

Not the same. At all.
i know im going to sound like a complete fucking idiot, but i'm p sure if you stole someones entire livelyhood, or investment, of cows, you are basically fucking them over forever
Which is why you get a jail sentence.
But not one that is longer than if you raped him, or in the some cases murdered him.

If someone raped somebody multiple times throughout a decade, or committed multiple murders throughout a decade, they would get a longer sentence.

In Georgia, and many other southern states, you can still be hung for stealing a mans horse. Livestock theft is a pretty serious crime in the south, thats a persons lively hood you're stealing, but 99 years is excessive.
Here's something the article the TC posted doesn't mention by the way.
Testimony at Curry’s trial revealed he had stolen 2,097 head of cattle worth nearly $1 million since 2007.
In April, Curry was sentenced to 20 years in a cattle rustling case in Smith County in East Texas, Heatly said.
And more.
Testimony at Curry's trial revealed he had stolen 2,097 head of cattle worth nearly $1m since 2007, Heatly said.
District Attorney Staley Heatly said: 'He is definitely' a serial cattle rustler.
'Going back to the late 90s when he was convicted of bank fraud.'
In a plea deal with federal prosecutors in Lubbock in 2000, Curry was ordered to pay restitution of $730,000, the district attorney said.
He served 18 months in prison and was released from probation of five years in September 2006 - still owing $680,000 in restitution.

Still nothing compared to Bernie.
He'll be able to enjoy the futuristic technology after he gets out of prison in 99 years. :)
