It's certainly been a while since we last reported on evidence regarding the on-going development of Half-Life 3, the long-awaited sequel to Half-Life 2: Episode Two released back in 2007. Well, it's that time again. Earlier today, a user by the name of ekim posted this thread to NeoGAF, highlighting an extremely minor, solitary reference to "hl3" within one of the many Dota 2's Workshop Tools files, which are known to run on a basic version of the Source 2 engine. The code string appears to be related to some kind of "physics_testbed" executable, as shown below.
hl3.exe has stopped working
Some sort of physics test so I am guessing it means fuck all.
NEW ARG??!?!??!
They could have just threw it in there just so someone would see it and bring it up. :tinfoil:
I swear, HL3 probably has one of the most desperate fanbases out there.

Well it's been a while, we can only hope hl3 is good.

Can you blame them? Ep2 ended in a huge cliffhanger to a great series.
8 years of absolute silence will do that.
8 years of silence should make people give up. That's almost a whole decade.
The thing about Half life 3 never being mention is about the same as how Danny or Arin never mention Jontron after he left, Except just more extreme.
Though they talked about him for two minutes just recently in an episode.
Gives me vibes of something along the lines of this. I wouldn't be surprised if they talked about engine physics at GDC, and showcase a small demo running on Source2.
That's a cool pachinko.

Didn't stop Duke Nukem Forever

You make it seem like it's somehow irrational or unjustified
The last game we got was 8 YEARS ago and left on a CLIFFHANGER

Yup, except this time it's showcasing their next-gen physics engine named Rubikon. The tools look really amazing so far.

WoW's community is just as or more desperate even though the game has been released and is actively worked on. :v:
In other HL3 related news, testinglol released some more info regarding the Source 2 presentation/directory listing leak from January 2014.
People who think Valve has totally forgotten about Half Life are fools.

Wow im pretty fucking hyped, Source still has some of the best physics to date, really gonna be surprised how they improve it.
Valve has had so much time to distance itself from source 1 that I have no idea what to expect from the next half life. Especially if they make a new half life: deathmatch with it
i just love the amount of people watching the thread right now
probably all have the same expression of disappointment and such

You never followed STALKER's development, haven't you?
Even though....
I don't really see a HL3 in the near future. I mean, I have said before -so have the guys over at Rock Paper Shotgun- that the gameplay mechanics are way outdated for these days. HL games allowed you to have all weapons at all times, a non regenerating HP, Armor points....things that don't seem to fare well with modern FPS.
As I see it, they have to mix in a lot of stuff in a single package. I wouldn't be really surprised if they do it Open Sandbox or ala Deus-Ex with huge levels and multiple paths.
Anyway, when it comes, no doubt it will break records and innovate in everything. For sure its AI will be nothing like we have seen before.
It feels like every week since I joined Facepunch I read something on the forum about Half-Life 3. It gets everyone's hopes up before destroying them entirely.
I hope it doesn't become the next Duke Nukem. Because there is no way Valve will be able to deliver, considering all the hype surrounding Half-Life 3.

all source engine based games run from hl2.exe. it wouldnt surprise me if they kept it up and just used hl3.exe for source2 stuff.

If only bad reading was still a thing, it said MINOR clearly in the title.

It's been a year since the last reference to it was found in code.

Hardly. They are going to ship it with the new source engine just like they did with hl2 and hl1. With all the games and projects valve has been involved in since ep2, plus creating a newer improved version of source 2, it's no wonder it's been taking 8 years.

I think L4D3 (if they're still planning on releasing that) might be the first game that actually uses Source 2's fancy new things. Dota 2 on Source 2 might technically release earlier but it'll still be mostly the same Dota 2.

You should try telling that to the US military trying to find WMD's in 2001

Probably because valve responds to questions about its existence in ways that cause people to go on a witchhunt
In a March 2010 interview, Newell hints that Valve intends to return the Half-Life franchise to its psychological horror roots by exploiting the fans' deepest fears, which he sums up as "the death of their children" and "the fading of their own abilities"
that's what I'm expecting with whatever the next half life is.
but this is one of the most interesting points of news that came out in like 2012
On January 13, Marc Laidlaw confirms the rumor that a fourth and canceled Half-Life 2 Episode, Return to Ravenholm, was developed by Arkane Studios from 2006 to 2009
sounds like that game was pretty basically done
