Abrams has confirmed the Portal and Half Life movies are still in development, and we can expect a Portal announcement "fairly soon". Speaking to IGN on the Westworld red carpet (Abrams produces the HBO show), the filmmaker said both films were "still very much in development". "We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon", said Abrams. When we asked if the movies would follow on from the story-lines that already exist in the games, Abrams kept his cards close to his chest. "We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom...once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing."
Can't wait for Chell on horse.
I didn't know J.J. Abrams liked videogames
Portal and HL movies could work if they focus on someone other then Chell and Freeman.
A portal movie sounds bad though
I didn't know J.J. Abrams liked videogames
He likes Half-Life. There were a few references to it in Lost (or was it Alias?) I think him and Gabe are friends too.
I can't really see Portal working as a movie.
Both are awful settings for films
... but why? [editline]29th September 2016[/editline] Like, would this be an animated movie? Live-action? Would Portal even work as live-action?

[editline]29th September 2016[/editline]
I can't really see Portal working as a movie.
It could be like Saw. just without the horror/thriller aspect.
Sure it could, just lots of computer enhancements.
I've seen so many bad live-action fan-films, I'm probably just sour from those :v: That said, if this is a prequel-type deal set in the 70s with Cave Johnson - and J.K Simmons reprising his role - I'll be ALL OVER that shit.
Cringe. No other possibility.
He likes Half-Life. There were a few references to it in Lost (or was it Alias?) I think him and Gabe are friends too.
There was a scene in Lost were a bunch of terrorists were playing Half-Life on a PS2. Anyway, I'm glad to see that these projects are moving forward. People were already claiming that these movies were dead, having no real understanding of how slowly these things move forward, especially when Valve is involved. I also fail to see how either Black Mesa, City 17 or Aperture Science would be boring settings for a movie. Basing the story around Freeman or Chell would obviously not work, but since when was that a given?
Please no, this is going to be terrible. Prepare yourself for a talking Freeman.
I can't really see Portal working as a movie.
it actually can if done correctly, which jj is good at most of portals charm is the writing
The only way I could see a Portal movie working is if they focus on something other than Chell's story. Such as the Ratman webcomic, which has possible potential to be a neat psycological horror movie.
If it ends up having a similar atmosphere to Cube, it could work.
Hopefully there aren't two movies suspiciously reminiscent of a different puzzle game that JJ likes better before it starts getting decent.
Please no, this is going to be terrible. Prepare yourself for a talking Freeman.
I doubt Valve would allow them to do that.
I'm hopefully optimistic about it, only because Gabe's been on record for turning down a shit load of movie ideas because "the people had no idea what the fuck Half life even was". I could see a dark comedy working well.
Its interesting that JJ is in a position where he has so much power and trust that he can probably get any project he wants funded
cave johnson solo movie, starring J. K. Simmons make it happen
... but why? [editline]29th September 2016[/editline] Like, would this be an animated movie? Live-action? Would Portal even work as live-action?
Disney just announced live action version of Lion King. Portal should be fine.
I imagine the Aperture stuff during the 60's-80's could be interesting.
Portal and HL movies could work if they focus on someone other then Chell and Freeman.
Or you just drop the silent protagonist thing.
I wonder if they'll make a Super 8 vidja to put a playable teaser of the Portal film in
Or you just drop the silent protagonist thing.
Why do that with the existing silent protagonist instead of making your own though?
cave johnson solo movie, starring J. K. Simmons make it happen
Id watch it Cave Johnson ramblings are the best fucking thing
The setting/atmosphere/world behind the games are absolutely wonderful, and leave a lot of elbow room for things to make a movie on. There are more characters that enrich the worlds than just the silent protagonists. Trying to replicate the game plots would be arbitrarily limiting when compared to all the opportunities the worlds and characters give. The key here is in the talent of those writing/directing/making the movie, not the games themselves.
Best of luck to them then 'cause sure as fuck they are gonna need it.
