Watching it on C-Span right now; I'll post a news link when one goes up. It just hit 216 votes. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35961584/ns/politics-health_care_reform/
WASHINGTON - Triumph in their grasp, President Barack Obama and House Democrats demonstrated command of the votes needed to pass landmark health care legislation Sunday night, a climactic chapter in a century-long quest for near universal coverage. The House argued its way through a thicket of Republican objections toward a late-evening vote on the bill to extend coverage to 32 million Americans who lack it, ban insurers from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions and cut deficits by an estimated $138 billion over a decade. "Today is the day that is going to rank with the day we passed the civil rights bill in 1964," said Rep. John Dingell of Michigan, a member of Congress since 1955. "Today we're doing something that ranks with what we did with Social Security or Medicare. This is a day of which we can all be proud if we vote for that legislation." Republicans said it was nothing of the sort, warning of a government takeover of the health care system, financed by a trillion dollars in higher taxes and Medicare cuts combined. "We have failed to listen to Americans," said Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio while making closing remarks before the final vote on the legislation. "And we failed to reflect the will of our constituents." Early vote cleared The measure cleared a critical early test vote, 224-206, a few hours after Obama and Democratic leaders struck a compromise with anti-abortion lawmakers whose votes had left the outcome in doubt. The president issued an executive order pledging that no federal funds would be used for elective abortion. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., and a handful of fellow abortion opponents said they were satisfied and announced their support for the bill. A spokesman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed skepticism that the presidential order would satisfy the church's objections. A shouting band of protesters outside the Capitol dramatized their opposition, and one man stood up in the House visitor's gallery yelling, "Kill the bill" before he was ushered out — evidence of the passions the tumultuous yearlong debate over health care has stirred. Passage of a central health care bill already cleared by the Senate would send it to Obama for his signature. That still would leave one more step, a companion package of changes would go to the Senate.
Fucking finally. Sadly, we didn't get a public option, or protections against unreasonable rate hikes. Hey, it's something. Still have 2 more bills to be passed, though, but they'll breeze through after this. :patriot: So when does Rush Limbaugh pack his bags?
Late?
You all do realize that it isn't done yet right.
I guess you could say, they passed the bill. :hawaaaafap:
Late?
Nope, posted exactly as the votes hit 216. [editline]02:47AM[/editline]
You all do realize that it isn't done yet right.
Which is why I only mentioned HR 3590 in the title. There's still 2 more bills to be passed.
You all do realize that it isn't done yet right.
What else needs to happen? Or what can go wrong for the whole program?
I wanted to wait until October to start posting comments again, but circumstances deem otherwise.
What else needs to happen? Or what can go wrong for the whole program?
2 more components of the bill need to go through, namely the amendments to the bill and the reconciliation bill. It's a done deal now, though.
Watch CSPAN now, it's hilarious. u mad GOP? :smug:
What else needs to happen? Or what can go wrong for the whole program?
Lots of shit needs to happen. Let's assume right now that the healthcare bill is passed completely and can go into action right now, which it is still very far from. It will take four years of tax revenue to begin to see any action taken on this behalf. This is assuming that the billions in revenue is even kept for the health reform, given the government isn't obligated to spend that saved money on this bill and given we are in a deficit it could just be spent to decrease our debt.
Good job America

Still not sure if I'm confident that this new reform will work but this is good news nonetheless.

Just a question.
I'm waiting for the debt to rise now.
We don't while we are increasing our deficit.
