Today's Nintendo Direct revealed details about a new 3DS update that will bring both Miiverse and a unified Nintendo Network ID to the system.
Register the same Nintendo Network ID on both your 3DS and your Wii U, and you can combine your balance on both systems, and buy games from the eShop on either. Previously, each system used a different wallet. There will also be a measure in place that allows players to access and use the remaining balance on either piece of hardware.
It's about damn time
Sweet! But are my eshop games still tied to my system?
Finally. They really need to get rid of Friendcodes and implement a good normal friendlist system.

They haven't said anything about how that will work.
I was starting to worry after the Swapnote incident that this would be either delayed or cancelled.
Good to see that we got a release date now.
Hoping one day the virtual console is united
thank you for exiting 2004 Nintendo

They need to, but they're so twitchy about being child friendly that they probably wont.
They shut down the ENTIRE swapnote system because some sexual predator in japan used it to ask two girls to send him pictures or something like that.
Note that they must have explicitly added his code and given him theirs in order for this communication to even be possible, meaning that they were in contact somehow before the 3DS even became a part of the equation.
I'm not saying that swift action against sexual predators is necessarily a bad thing, but they're not going to drop any of the restrictions they currently have with this kind of attitude.
Fucking FINALLY, took them bloody long enough!
Good, now if only Nintendo can go even further doing a good idea, i mean come on, no one really cares about the Move or the Kinnect, yet they always compare it to the Wiimote (like they should), but Nintendo seems the least western in comparison to the other 2, them stealing the basic idea of an account-wide system would instantly be a winner for them.
Hopefully by having an account system up, we could eventually download games to a number of systems....sorta wish that they supported the Wii though, since i have games in there that has been long since been discontinued, like the Donkey Kong Country trilogy..
One thing im unsure about is how does the transferring works, is it possible for games to be transferred to the Wii U, even if they've never been formally released for the actual Wii U VC?

Yes, it is possible to transfer your Wii VC games to the Wii U. The Wii U has its own separate Wii menu where you can play your Wii games, Wii VC games, and access the Wii shop channel to purchase VC games and WiiWare.

Yeah, I used to be optimistic after seeing really loose online restrictions on games like ACNL, but then the Swapnote shutdown happened and I lost all hope. Nintendo is too afraid of losing its ironclad family-friendly image to allow an open online system like XBL or PSN.
I just hope they actually start implementing actual account features. They can keep friend codes; now that they're unified across all games I don't really care anymore (unlike the DS days), but they seriously need to decouple game licenses and eShop accounts from the console itself. It's the last hurdle stopping me from buying all my games digital, because while I'd love to have all of them on my handheld at the same time I also don't want to lose everything if my 3DS gets left behind somewhere or Nintendo's repair center fails to restore my data after my 3DS takes a bad tumble (which has happened to a lot of people).
It's gonna be really cool having Miiverse on 3DS, though. It really is a great service. I just wonder if they'll let 3DS games take advantage of it. I really liked how it was implemented in Wind Waker HD.
