MTV plans to rebrand VH1 Classic as MTV Classic starting on August 1st. According to a statement from the company, the new channel will focus on "an eclectic mix of fan-favorite MTV series and music programming drawn from across its rich history, with a special focus on the 1990s and early 2000s." The August 1st switch date has special significance, commemorating the launch of MTV 35 years ago on August 1st, 1981. The debut hour of MTV Classic will replicate the first hour of programming in MTV's history. In a nod to modern technology, fans will also be able to watch "MTV Hour One" via Facebook Live on the channel's Facebook page.
Rolling Stone
I get a feeling if it isn't beaten in terms of viewership it'll at least be way more popular than MTV as it is now. [editline]e[/editline] does anyone still like, watch MTV? I know nowadays it's supposed to be garbage reality tv aimed at teenagers but...does anyone tune in for that? All the teens I know just watch youtube and netflix, a lot of them don't even watch TV at all let alone shitty reality tv.
That's nice and all, but videoclips, and MTV as we knew it, is just a thing of the past. It doesn't work today. I use Netflix and Spotify for all my entertainment needs. They should find a way to cram themselves into that new market, instead of trying to refloat an arcaic one. [editline]28th July 2016[/editline] For instance - I don't need no MTV Classics if I want to binge watch Beavis and Butt-Head, I can find them online if I just do less than 2 minutes of googling.
"we'll bring back slurm classic, and make billions!"
I give it three months before it ends up yet another cesspool of Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, Rob Dyrdek programming, etc reruns.
That's the only channel that even shows music videos still, and you want to put the stuff that forced the genre shift back onto it? No. Keep the MTV Unplugged, Beavis and Butthead, and Headbanger's Ball, but don't go adding shit like real world and road rules, etc. and ruin this again.
Uhhuuhhuuhhuuuh cool
This would be a fantastic chance for Muchmusic to come up with something leagues better than what MTV plans to do. [editline]28th July 2016[/editline] But then again, looks like both companies are run by old farts stuck in 1993, apparently. [editline]28th July 2016[/editline] It's strange, I've always felt that Much was a step ahead of MTV, specially when it came to their programming. I remember watching Cannibal Corpse and King Diamond videoclips on Much, but nothing even remotely as devastating as CC on MTV, ever. Much is where I first heard Soulfly. Ah the memories. :v:
From the Viacom site:
• Programming on MTV Classic will remain largely consistent with what is on the channel today (VH1 Classics) - but with more classic MTV music and entertainment programming infused as time goes on. • The music video blocks and music focused movies will remain on the channel. • MTV Classic will bring back select episodes of iconic MTV franchises like Unplugged, 120 minutes, Yo MTV Raps, Beavis and Butthead, and other fan-favorites. • Looking ahead, the long term programming plan is to refresh and also invest in creating new episodes of some of the most iconic music franchises like 120 minutes, Yo MTV Raps, and Headbangers Ball – presented with a new look and feel that will resonate strongly with today’s audience.
I like the idea, but why is it taking over VH1 Classic? Why not use MTV2?
MTV is pure fucking garbage nowadays. Anything that isn't pandering to le meme crowd reality shows that is actual music videos is fine by me.
I have 0 doubt they will fuck it up somehow.
