EA likens difference between Origin and Steam to difference between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty
EA has likened the difference between digital platforms Origin and Steam to the difference between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty."Battlefield 3 isn't Call of Duty. Battlefield 3 is great, it's a shooter, but it's a great shooter in its own right. I want Origin to be the exact same thing," Origin boss David DeMartini told Gamasutra."That doesn't mean Call of Duty is bad," he continues. "I don't want to see Steam become bad. They're a partner of us. They do a lot of good things. What I want is I want Origin to be differentiable and better as a service, which is similar to what Steam does."Last week DeMartini raised eyebrows when he promised that Origin wouldn't copy Steam's popular 75 per cent off sales because, in his words, they "cheapen IP".The battle between Origin and Steam has raged over the last year, but both EA and Valve agree that Origin has a long way to go before it offers as good a service as Steam."Well, give us a few more years, and maybe we'll be better than Steam," DeMartini told Gamasutra."That said, right now we're not. Steam took eight years to get where it is. We're not going to take eight years, but we're going to get there and go beyond."According to DeMartini, the plan is for Origin to become a "viable alternative" to Steam. That, he believes, is "what people want to see". "They want us to differentiate in a way that sets us apart."Origin will over the next 12 months focus on features that will realise this goal. "We need to take full advantage of that multiplatform capability that EA brings," DeMartini continued. "We need to be able to visualise that in the service in a way that allows you amongst your circle of gaming friends to differentiate yourself or demonstrate your skills multiplatform versus other people you game with or who you are interested in their opinion."
This is coming from the same suit that said steam sales cheapen IPs.
DeMartini just sounds like a stereotypical businessman name.
Origin is a shooter because EA uses it to shoot themselves in the foot.
I expected him to be saying "WE DA BEST IN EVERY WAY". This is pretty honest with him openly admitting that Origin is flawed.
"Battlefield 3 is a shooter"
So I guess Call of Duty is a cooking simulator?
BF and COD?
Try Robocop and Weekend at Bernie's
ha
haha
HAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
It's refreshing to see them admit that Origin still has a long way to go.
Dont worry EA, i know you're trying your best to try and bankrupt yourself, but you're getting there, slowly but surely you're getting there, you just gotta try a LITTLE bit harder.
"I don't want to see Steam become bad."
Yeah, I'm afraid that Origin will NEVER even get close to doing that.
What's up with EA's fascination with Call of Duty.

EA will never bankrupt, no matter how hard they try. To change that fact, the customers need to know better.

They get money off of children so easily, even if the game is rushed and sucks.
I'd suspect all indie developers to want to stay as far away from Origin as possible. It's what I would do, at least. I'd never want to sign any sort of contract with EA.
If this does happen, then EA can stuff as much features into Origin as they want, but it'll never have the rich library of fun games Steam offers. And since they themselves clearly won't produce any games that aren't ruined by DRM or DLC bullshit, Origin won't ever get the chance to get a good library.
i dont know whats with all this origin hate bandwagon, from a techincal aspect it works really great and atleast it doesnt install directx all the time unlike steam.
So, Origin is CoD?
i dont know whats with all this origin hate bandwagon, from a techincal aspect it works really great and atleast it doesnt install directx all the time unlike steam.
Actually it does, it just does it as a part of the installation process.
Origin won't have to take eight years, because it won't last nearly that long before EA shuts it down.
It's funny. Steam is embedded in PC gaming. Every PC gamer at least knows steam and how good it is.
Then origin walks in, thinking it can knock steam off its tower by using insults. At least Valve has the decency to not insult back.
Difference between Battlefield and COD.
Well that means one is really good and the other is an overhyped piece of shit.

Doesn't Steam do that because certain games require different DirectX files then each other?
I almost feel sorry for them, they are trying to make themselves better but are unable to comprehend why they can't
I would have thought the main difference is that one is on steam and the other isn't.
Doesn't Steam do that because certain games require different DirectX files then each other?
It's more the games don't read from a standardised directory just as a precaution, and there are a few that let you replace the library, which would fuck other games up if it was standardised (FO:NV needed this for a while).

Directx has to be installed

Steam is the Half-Life. Not some mediocre shooter.
Don't just bandwagon against origin, the guy brings up some fair points and respects Valve's place in the industry. At least they know what is wrong with their platform and are working to improve it.

The only way to improve origin is to close it
forever
"Battlefield 3 isn't Call of Duty."
And thank god for that.

You're a fucking idiot if you believe that. Origin can work as a platform, EA just need to put a lot of work into it. People said the exact same things when Steam launched (and when Steam launched it barely fucking worked anyway). But look at it now, enough work was put into it and it is now the de-facto platform for digital distribution.

Actually you'd be surprised at how many PC gamers there are today who still hate it with a passion.
