Wait, Zips. Why is the Left4Dead update "optional"? Steam forced me to download it.

I 'unno. The HLDS initially said that these updates were optional. They then updated it and said the TF2 was not optional.
With stuff like this, it's usually just optional for server admins, not for clients. Unless, of course, you're talking about a server you run.
Interesting...

I don't run a Left4Dead server, and both Left4Dead and the L4D Hammer Tools got updated.
Why can't people run a game based of an engine 6 years old on high?

Because it's not the same engine from six years ago. Couple that with the fact that not everybody has the money to spend on upgrades, especially in today's economy.

Actually, considering it's a recession the companies will be hungry therefore lowering their prices so you buy more from them. If you have a part-time job it shouldn't really affect you that much as you'll probably stay at minimum wage, worse they can do is lower your hours. So yeah if you have a job you can spend money on upgrades RIGHT NOW as it is cheaper. If you don't, get a job you lazy bum.
I dunno why they love Novint so much. I wouldn't use one, for I have a mouse.
Updates are looking pretty good, fixing bugs and what-not. I'm still awaiting the GMOD achievement update that Garry submitted today to be announced.

Except for the fact that jobs are in rather short supply at the moment due to job losses in industry sectors that are shrinking due to recession.
