Target's Mad Because People Are Walking In To Look At Shit Then Buying Online, Asks Vendors For Excl

(for the unaware: Target is a huge retailer chain in the US. I don't know if they're in any other countries)

Summary from Slashdot:
"Marissa Taylor says the retail chains' worst nightmare are consumers who come in to take a look at merchandise in-store, but use smartphone apps to shop for cheaper prices online. But now stores like low-end retail chain Target plan to fight 'showrooming' by scaling up their business models and asking vendors to create Target-exclusive products that can't be found online. 'The bottom line is that the more commoditized the product is, the more people are going to look for the cheapest price,' says Morningstar analyst Michael Keara. 'If there's a significant price difference [among retailers] and you're using it on a regular basis, you're going to go to Amazon.' Target recently sent an 'urgent' letter to vendors, asking them to 'create special products that would set it apart from competitors.' Target's letter insisted that it would not 'let online-only retailers use our brick-and-mortar stores as a showroom for their products and undercut our prices without making investments, as we do, to proudly display your brands.' Target also announced that it had teamed up with a handful of unique specialty shops that will offer limited edition merchandise on a rotating basis within Target stores in hopes of creating an evolving shopping experience for customers. Target is 'exercising leverage over its vendors to achieve the same pricing that smaller, online-only retailers receive,' says Weinswig. 'This strategy would help Target compete with retailers like Amazon on like-for-like products.'"
Because people aren't getting it: They aren't trying to run the online retailers out. They're trying to offer something unique, and compete for business. You know, the way the system is supposed to work.
What? Does capitalism hurt when it doesn't benefit the corporations?
I am crying big tears of sadness for you, target. Sobbin' away.
oh god people are actually getting better deals by not being a dumbass sheep and just buying into your product without further insight
it's like the other companies provide a better service!
I'll get the lawyers on the phone right away!
It's like they want the general consumer to be some airheaded dimwit. Albeit, that generally is the case, but who can blame a person for wanting to spend as little as possible for a product in this economy?
Please be stupid and give us all your money QQ
People are shopping for lower prices..........pfft it's not like we're in a recession or anything right? seriously some of the idea's these companies come up with they deserve to go under for being retarded.
i think the us should enforce a law in which when you walk into a store you have to buy something

Absolutely unenforcable. What kind of penalty are you going to have for that exactly, if the person doesn't have enough money to buy something, or didn't bring their wallet? Throw them in jail?

The joke.
Your head.
Well, at least they're not providing 'solutions' like 'banning smartphone use inside stores'. They're trying to find a way to compete somehow.

Well excuse me.
Seemed pretty obvious.
people have said worse things sincerely.

Uh...
No, it appears they want "to achieve the same pricing that smaller, online-only retailers receive" and making shopping in person an "experience" of some sort, which would actually be acknowledging a need to step up and compete and provide something unique.
Seriously, where did the Target hatred come from? A slightly less shitty version of Walmart realized they needed to change business strategies and you guys are acting like they're fucking fiends?
At least they're trying to compete with it by offering a better product. It's a good thing.
They could try some sort of derp-tastic "sue the online retailers" or "No cell phones allowed within the building" bullshit. Glad they aren't though.

Probably because I used the word "mad" in the title.
the power of suggestion

Why are you guys being sarcastic about this? This is actually really good for the consumer because Target is looking at getting unique items to compete with online sellers. This will allow more variety for better prices.
Well think about it, target and other retailers are pretty huge companies, if they all go under there goes a fuckload of jobs (often first time employment for loads of people) which makes it harder for inexperienced people to get work experience, and damages people with shares in big companies like this.
It's a very real threat that retailers like this could go under simply because they invested in physical locations to sell their stuff.
I'll write a new bill to stop this behavior! SOSA - the Stop Online Shopping Act.
ohnoooo the economic system that we all supposedly love so much is coming around to bite the big bad corporations in their big beefy asses.

now i can go to sleep knowing that my work here is done, thank you
solution: turn all retail stores into warehouses and ship to online retailers or make your own online retailer
What about people without credit cards etc?
Actually I buy online because it is incredible how retail jacks up the price.
DVI to HDMI adapter:
Best Buy: $30.00
Online: $1.99
15ft HDMI cable
Best Buy: $79.99
Monoprice: $12.00

An on-the-spot fine.
Flawless.
It's just like drm; affecting the people who actually shop at target, but not the others.
Good job, target.
I work there and I do this.
I'm pretty sure Target price matches, can't they advertise that more? If they match a better price I find online then I'll be more likely to buy from them due to convenience.
Competitors just being better than you? Monopolize the products!
