As protests start up in Indonesia against Australia's espionage activity, Indonesian media has ramped up its participation: Newspaper says "express regret; do not want to apologise" Source: https://twitter.com/George_Roberts The first image is the first time I have seen animosity of that kind to an Australian leader from overseas (not saying it hasn't happened). Sad really. [editline]21st November 2013[/editline] At first I thought the kangaroo wasn't removing a feather so much as shoving something up the eagle's backside.
Also they're burning our flags in protest
How long until they start killing random people who have nothing to do with any of it?
Welp, the aussie expats are probably in danger now.
They haven't come to the point of killing kangeroos and koalas yet. Australia really need to apologise and stop spying on Indonesia or else any Aussie working or visiting in Indonesia is going to end up hurt or even killed
How long until they start killing random people who have nothing to do with any of it?
Bali's a popular tourist destination as well - it has the potential to get pretty nasty. I should expect to see the Australian embassies issue a travel advisory for the foreseeable future regarding these recent developments.

Stopping the espionage is not going to happen and I'm sure Indonesia know that, as do every other country involved in the NSA scandals. After the Bali Bombings I understand why Indonesia is spied on to an extent. It's pretty ironic that they hate us, yet Indonesia is the largest recipient of foreign aid from Australia. We gave them $650m to help deal with the GFC, and have been giving that amount each year ever since. They gave us $1m to deal with Black Friday fires, which is of course understandable since Indonesia is a 3rd world country. Yeah the spying is bad and a betrayal of trust, but it's not a reason to start burning the flag of a country which does a lot for you.

Indonesia has become much more Muslim, while Bali has remained very Hindu and rather untouched by the rest of the Muslim population. And in addition to the above post, we basically run their economy seeing how it basically relies on tourism in Bali.
How long until they start killing random people who have nothing to do with any of it?
I believe they stated it would be around 24 hours.

I don't really see why we need to apologize. Is there really any need to? Why is it so offensive that in this day and age a country would spy on another country? If anything, their reaction is breaking relations up with us by burning our flag and publicly dissing us. Yeah, like provocation will totally lead us to become friends with them. It's like saying "I'll throw this at you if you don't give that to me!". If the person throws the object at you, what reason would you have to give what you have to them? If anything, this is doing us a favor. They hate us now, and that's actually worked in our favor: most of them will hate us enough to not want to come here, any that do will be few and far between. This has actually worked in our favor. If anything their reactions have just given us another reason to spy on them. You're a government official, you should realize people are going to be tapping your phone and that you aren't going to have privacy for a looooooong time.
I don't think I'll be travelling to Bali for a while now. Indonesia don't like Bali to begin with (Bali bombings), I fear a second bombings could occur due to the hatred they hold towards Australia and Bali now, and Bali is basically filled with Aussies at any time.

I can't see him caving. It's interesting that Indonesia's top spy master says that his President has blown this out of proportion because tapping is common and everyone does it, but then says that we should apologise anyway. If anything that's an implication that Indonesia spies on us - and I'm sure they do. If there were any serious attacks or issues from this, I can see Australia severely cutting Indonesia's aid and tourists will just stop going to Bali. Bali's economy will be crippled, and it'll hit Indonesia hard - Bali makes up over 25% of Indonesia's forex earnings. After the Bali Bombings in 2002 over 2.7m workers were unemployed because tourists just stopped going. This huge reaction is going to hurt Indonesia a lot more than it's going to hurt us.
I disagree that spying is something you should just have to put up with as a government official,
While I do agree with you, the thing is you really actually have to kiss goodbye to any form of privacy as a government official or celebrity, or any person of major importance. You're in the spotlight, and even when you leave it people are going to keep watching you anyway. It's an unfortunate part of life, and now even the average civilian has to put up with the fact that they are being spied on 24/7 now. There's no changing it now, it's too integrated into our society now to do anything effective about it. Also, I believe this should be the thread's theme music:
Don't be surprise if Indonesia starts having a lot of Pyros to do some spycheck nowadays.
What I have heard, the people that does the protest is from the muslims activist [editline]21st November 2013[/editline] oh and yeah, Bali is now the more less Muslim city in Indonesia
