Gary Kurtz, the producer of the first two “Star Wars” films and the man who walked away from the franchise in 1980, is not the excitable type. He speaks in even tones and pragmatic terms, but there was a clear tinge of eager energy in his voice when he sat down recently to discuss “Panzer 88,” his first foray into effects-heavy feature films since the 1980s.
“It’s a good, good project, you haven’t seen anything like it for a while,” Kurtz said of the spooky wartime adventure that is planned as a $20 million independent film and will begin shooting in the winter. “It’s a visceral, reality-based story with horror overtones, and the idea is to have be like the best of the graphic novels these days.”
The plot follows the five-man German crew of the Ilsa — a King Tiger, the biggest tank of its day – on a mission to the frigid and fearsome Russian border, where they tread into an ancient mystery by stirring a powerful entity. The original screenplay was written by Aaron Mason and James Cowan; they share the writing credit with Peter Briggs, who will direct. Briggs, who co-wrote the screenplay for “Hellboy,” finds himself back in the paranormal territories of the Third Reich, but he said this film hopes for a different caliber of character emotion and a “Band of Brothers” sort of ensemble.
“I’d already written a paranormal World War II sequence in the opening of ‘Hellboy,’ the British filmmaker said. “Tonally, ‘Panzer 88′ is a tad different from that. Our military aspects are more realistic, and mostly akin to the claustrophobic action and tension of ‘Das Boot.’ We’re aiming to do for the tank genre what ‘Hunt For Red October‘ and ‘Crimson Tide’ did for submarine flicks. Only, with a supernatural twist. We’re upping the ante with visuals, equipment, and scenes that have never been seen in a World War II milieu. In retrospect, it’s strange nobody’s thought to do this in quite this way before…”
Holy shitfucking fuck a good looking WWWII movie.
Cause PANZERS KICK ASS!
I'm actually kind of happy to see the Germans aren't the evil guys this time :v:
I'm looking forward to this one.
It sounds really interesting. I'm a real fan of more realistic war flicks, but the way they are painting this it sounds awesome. Make it realistic in the portrayal of how tank crews operated, but have the paranormal stuff for plot.
I seriously hope they pull this off well and make it really tense.
I want to see this.
Looks interesting.
Both movies I'm looking forward to have to do with Nazis: Iron Sky, and now this :v:

Wordly World War II?
This film looks fucking awesome
I am mostly soviet side WWII fanboy but this looks fucking awesome.
Even if this movie turns out badly, I expect some awesome and artistic visuals.
By the way, the tank on the concept art looks much more like Tiger I than Tiger II.
This is going to be awesome.

Fuck, that sounds so wrong.
I don't have anything to say, I just want to WATCH.
So its a movie where the Germans are the good guys?
[editline]16th April 2011[/editline]
And maybe this is the beginning of the Warhammer 40k universe?
:v:

Not much more wrong that Soviet fanboys. I have no idea why it's more acceptable to be on the USSR's side instead of the Axis one, both were run by murderers and psychos (heck the USSR killed more people than Nazi Germany). German WWII equipment, uniforms and vehicles were damn badass though (Soviet ones were pretty cool too, but not as cool).
Anyway, dat railway cannon.
There was one film I saw about an IDF Tank Crew and shit gets fucked. Can't remember what it was called but it was pretty good.

So your saying if I stab a puppy, and my friend stabs 2 puppies, you'll all therefore have to be on my side because my friend is worse? Why do you have to be on EITHER side?
Anyways, this movie does look like it'll be pretty awesome, King tiger vs Balrog is definitely up there on my list of things that I'd like to see

Nope, what I'm saying is exactly what you are saying, both are (were) bad.

I've always wondered how big of a bang it's shells made (I mean they are nearly as large as a T34).

Goebbels was the one that made it so that Hitler hated jews. He was the one that set up Kristallnacht. It was all his fault.

I don't know what kind of T34s you know but you would have to push really hard to fit one into a 80cm muzzle.

Not that much of a difference.
Not much. It's only 3.5x as wide as the shell.
Woah.
This is going to be awesome :v:
