ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement. The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse. State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets. Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.
http://news.yahoo.com/ny-motorcyclist-dies-ride-protesting-helmet-law-143217859.html I know it's sad and all somebody dying. But ... the irony is so immense I think I need to sit down.

Oh god the irony is overwhelming.
Well, they did warn him.
There goes the protester's credibility.
Isn't Gary Busey also against helmet laws? Despite being involved in a nasty motorcyle accident?
why would you even protest wearing helmets
If I was a raging dumbass I'd post that irony a-bomb gif.
I don't see why you wouldn't want to wear a helmet. My dad would have died before I was even a 1 year old had he not had a helmet.
Who the hell protests against wearing helmets?
why would you even protest wearing helmets
Libertarians They acknowledge that it's stupid. But they argue that it's their right to be stupid, and the government should have no say. Same reason they often argue for legalization of all drugs, and against seat belt laws, etcetera.
The irony is so great that I have set up a irony mine and I am selling loads of good quality irony to companies who produce steely with the irony by using a little bit of carbony.
I know its sad that someone has died and all, but really what the fuck. I can't think of any sane reason to protest any sort of helmet law. I know people are against the idea of the government trying to be peoples parents, but in this case they are actually right.

There is so much irony it makes me believe that maybe there is a god, and he has a great sense of humor.
why would you even protest wearing helmets
It's annoying having a helmet at times, but it's good for keeping your head fairly dry, and for the obvious fact it protects your head, one of my friends would most likely have been dead without one.
I'm jumping your claim. The irony is mine.
No, I got there first. I own the land there I have the deed and all.
One of my uncles died in a motorcycle accident because the helmet caught on a pothole and snapped his neck.
One of my uncles died in a motorcycle accident because the helmet caught on a pothole and snapped his neck.
And at the same time, ten lives were saved by wearing them.
And at the same time, ten lives were saved by wearing them.
I'm not saying that we shouldn't have the laws, I was just pointing out that sometimes Murphy's Law will win over preparedness and safety.
One of my uncles died in a motorcycle accident because the helmet caught on a pothole and snapped his neck.
What was he doing? Dragging his head on the ground while riding?
More likely, he fell off the bike, in a way that would have been non-fatal, but as he slid on the ground, it caught and caused the injury.
lol
And that, kids, is a textbook example of irony.
Yes helmets are for your own safety but there shouldn't be a law forcing you to wear a helmet. It should be up to the person to decide what he wants.
Libertarians They acknowledge that it's stupid. But they argue that it's their right to be stupid, and the government should have no say.
What I find disgusting is that people who protest this don't think at all about what their families would have to go through (and pay) if they were to die doing something stupid like not wearing a helmet.
Motorcycles have been called iron horses, this one was more like an irony horse.
Yes helmets are for your own safety but there shouldn't be a law forcing you to wear a helmet. It should be up to the person to decide what he wants.
Think of it this way. The state authorizes you to drive on roads that it builds and as a condition to ride on the roads it forces you to wear a helmet. Additionally, if the rider is uninsured, the state would also pay his medical bills and helmets statistically prevent or lessen serious accidents moreso than not wearing one. If you were to crash, you clog up the roads and force police, firefighters, ambulances and whatever else public employees to come to the scene which costs money. If your injury was less severe because you had a helmet, the response need not be so large. If the U.S. had a developed country's healthcare, the government would pay for all of your medical bills so I could use the argument that the state could force you to wear a helmet to lower its costs. Private road? Go for it, don't wear a helmet. But if you're riding on public roads then I see no problem with the state telling you you have to wear a helmet because driving is a privilege.
