Duden, the equivalent of the Oxford English Dictionary in the UK, said it was reflecting the common use of the word "shitstorm" among Germans. The word, which is used in German to denote a public outcry, seems to have caught on during the eurozone crisis. German language experts voted it "Anglicism of the year" in 2012.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23142660
It is a very German kind of word in the way that it formed, so it's not that much of a sticker out. Edit: Germans make new words by mashing together words that describe the concept. Guess how this one formed.
such a beautiful language
I now know one more German word.
Scheißsturm?
I bet this is gonna cause a real shitstorm. Hah! No red line!
I haven't heard anyone use the word "shitstorm" here yet, not even at school. Maybe it takes some time to spread.
Wonder how long it takes till YOLO is a real word.
I mean, we already have about 10 words in the Duden beginning with the word: Scheiß (shit) like Scheißjob (shitty job) scheißladen (shitty market) or Scheißhaus (shit house, but used like the word toilet)
Wonder how long it takes till YOLO is a real word.
If I recall correctly it's already a recognised word by the Van Daele dictionaries
If I recall correctly it's already a recognised word by the Van Dale dictionaries
Are you, what? O.O
Wonder how long it takes till YOLO is a real word.
Please, god no. I mean, the philosophy of that word is wise, but it's been so overused by egomaniacal douchebags who think their making legitimate philisophical statements, but are really just giving themselves excuses to act like dumbasses. Such is the fate of ANY meaningful phrase.
Wonder how long it takes till YOLO is a real word.
It's an acronym made up of real words so it could be counted as a real word already.
Scheißsturm?
Or Kacksturm or Fäkalunwetter for the higher class.
SCHEIßSTURM! :v: [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] damnit, late

So, is this the Germans using english 'shitstorm' or is it the german version of shitstorm?
German is always leading us in the way of social progress.
I visited some relatives in Switzerland last summer. From what I could tell they never swore in German, but every now and then they would say "shit".
I love the fact that Merkel said it, the notion of the word "shitstorm" appearing in the midst of a perfectly normal german sentence amuses me.
German is just full of anglicisms which make it confusing for english speakers to learn. This isn't helping...
Clusterfuck needs to be a real word too!
I visited some relatives in Switzerland last summer. From what I could tell they never swore in German, but every now and then they would say "shit".
Germans constantly swear in english, and i am pretty sure this goes for almost every european.
I once asked my German teacher back in High School if there was a German equivalent or translation for Shitstorm. Now there is! We're making progress!

Republicans and soccer moms move to ban the German language from the US, claiming it infringes on the Christian values the country was founded upon

I like the german dictionary's name 'yo this is spelt right, duden says so dude'
Germans call gloves "hand-socks"
Actually, Handschuhe or "hand-shoes".
