Soviet soldier 'missing' since 1980 found in Afghanistan A former Red Army soldier who went missing in action (MIA) in 1980 during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan has been found alive almost 33 years after he was rescued by Afghan tribesmen. Talk about metamorphosis.
I like his beard.
That's a big handful of people to track down.
I wonder if this guy is gonna be one of those "social time capsule" cases like that super-remote [del]Serbian[/del] Siberian family?
SIBERIAN you biatch

Siberian.
Honest mistake guys, sorry.
Thats pretty incredible.
What made his eyes so red and his beard three different colors?
What made his eyes so red and his beard three different colors?
Pure communism flowing through his body.
I wonder if this guy is gonna be one of those "social time capsule" cases like that super-remote Serbian family?
SIBERIAN you biatch
What made his eyes so red and his beard three different colors?
Probably age.
What made his eyes so red and his beard three different colors?
War, hell, hard living, and age. Everything expected from living after being "rescued" while invading another country.
I wonder if this guy is gonna be one of those "social time capsule" cases like that super-remote Serbian family?
Siberian.
I how much contact with the outside world he and his tribe got. Like, does he knokw the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore?
I how much contact with the outside world he and his tribe got. Like, does he knokw the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore?
The tribe is semi-nomadic, so it's not like they were completely cut off from the rest of the world. I'm sure they venture into major cities from time to time for supplies.
He must have felt like shit to hear when the USSR fell.
What made his eyes so red and his beard three different colors?
Probably all the sand over there.
He must have felt like shit to hear when the USSR fell.
Probably not.
I read that many of those who went AWOL in Afghanistan went over to the tribes that captured them as if they were found to have left camp without permission and not just captured by the mujahideen their family would loose their pension. Apparently it has been a pretty common occurrence for people to turn up years later when thought dead
Probably all the sand over there.
Afghanistan is mostly mountainous.
I bet he's been out of contact so long he's still telling In Soviet Russia jokes.
Read the article folks. He was a soviet UZBEk soldier i.e. his first language wasn't even russian. And according to wikipedia, uzbek language is spoken in parts of afghanistan. So, this guy had a pretty smooth transition.
There was this thing on BBC once, a handful of Ukrainian Soviet troops stayed behind, changed their name and pretty much became Afghan, crazy stuff
What made his eyes so red and his beard three different colors?
coloring beards is something you do in afghanistan
He must have felt like shit to hear when the USSR fell.
Doubt it, considering he possibly stole a rifle and sold it to the Muj to escape the soviet army.
Holy shit its like that one Japanese Soldier they found in the Phillipines in the 70s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroo_Onoda
He must have felt like shit to hear when the USSR fell.
Believe me, it's much better for everyone now that USSR is gone.
rescued by Afghan tribesmen
Really? I didn't think the Afghans were in the mood to be helping any Russians during that time period. His ethnicity probably helped, but still.
Really? I didn't think the Afghans were in the mood to be helping any Russians during that time period. His ethnicity probably helped, but still.
The tribe that helped him probably didn't care about the conflict, and just tried to stay out of it. They saw a wounded Uzbek man and helped him. Or if he did what the article accused him of, he sold a rifle to him and stuck around with them.
He looks generally happy in the photo but I really want to know how he'll react to everything he might be told about from USSR to current technology. That being said, I'm not saying he's been 100% isolated but assuming he hasn't heard much about anything outside his group and travel locations, I wonder just how he'll react.
Whoa, that really reminds me of the movie Beast of War.
