Police are arresting a couple hundred people who strapped themselves to the White House fence on Sunday to protest the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline.
The protesters were mostly college students who participated in a peaceful march that began at Georgetown University and ended outside the White House.
They chanted "climate justice now" and carried signs such as "don't tarnish the earth" in their efforts to convince U.S. President Barack Obama to reject the pipeline. They say it will contribute to global warming. Protesters were passionate but quite orderly.
Okay we'll let you have constitutional rights but only when, where, and how we deem fit.
It wont contribute to Global warning like they think. The main reason I'm against it is that Americans will literally destroy it if it goes through the mainland.
Protesting is pretty much illegal under international law at this point
Stop it! Concentrate on Russia! What are you doing?!
Meanwhile, tensions in Eastern Europe reach an all time high, and thousands of lives are at risk as the possibility of war hits its peak.
"Let's protest the same thing we've protested all the time, oil!"
"ok!"
It says the police were already waiting with buses to speed the process of arrest. They warned the protesters that strapping themselves to the fence or blocking the walkways would lead to their arrest.

Would you rather have them change their mind every five minutes?
I think the keystone xl should be built.

I'm against it because fuck off with Canada's oil, until gas is under a buck a litre we shouldn't be selling our bloody oil to anyone.
it's the manner in which the protested that got them arrested
How? According to OP's article it was peaceful.

It's a pipeline that goes over one of the worlds largest fresh water aquifers. If a leak or a spill occurs it could make water for millions undrinkable and devastate farming in the region. It's a pretty big deal.

These protesters were not legitimate.

Alright, out of everyone here, I definitely want to hear your explanation.

honestly, if stopping global warming is lower on your list of things to do than fixing a short term war then I disagree heavily.
the future of all of us is far more important than just a country. any country.
Police were waiting for them with buses and vans to speed the process. The protesters cheered as U.S. Park Police warned them that blocking the sidewalk or strapping themselves to the fence would lead to their arrest.
They were warned before they were arrested. But they completely ignored them and got arrested. They definitely deserved it.
Didn't experts already say that the pipeline would have very minimal effect on the environment?
Fuckin' hippies.

Considering the number of accidents with shipping it by train or truck lately, it's probably the safest option.
oh my god it's a fucking tube
that bigass oil pipeline in alaska doesn't hurt anything...
Considering the number of accidents with shipping it by train or truck lately, it's probably the safest option.
it's probably more energy efficient than traditional shipping methods tbh

The Oils getting sold if it's to the United States or not. If we don't buy it, China probably will. Which will increase the volume of oil flowing through the mountains of BC to Canada west coast. An area that's a lot more fragile than the path of the Keystone. Then it has to travel on a boat a few thousand miles to China risking at-sea spills like Valdez.
Oil sand production is going to increase regardless most likely.
The only environmental risk I could foresee would be leakage into the Ogallala aquifer. But that risk is easily mitigated with strict monitoring and maintenance.
The Oil's not gonna go away if we don't use it. So we might as well be the ones that get to decide how safely it's spent.
Okay I get flexing your rights, but strapping yourself to a ducking fence?
These people had what was coming to them.

I'm not too informed on the situation so I could be wrong, but can you explain why it shouldn't be built? I heard a statistic a while ago that the top ~15 of the worlds largest ships produce the same amount of pollution as every car in the world. If a pipeline helps reduce the number of those ships I don't understand how that's a bad thing?
And I mean sure, accidents happen, but I'm pretty sure accidents are far less likely to happen and less catastrophic if they happen in a pipeline, as opposed to the open ocean.

Also it seems like the majority of the complaints against it are easily mitigated by extremely simple engineering practices like pressure regulation along the pipe and gates that can be sealed to minimize damage in case of a leak. Also IIRC every person in alaska gets >$1000 every year from royalties from their pipeline. So I'm having trouble seeing why it's a bad thing.
Pipelines can't crash or sink or derail. They can have people whose job it is to sit and watch pressure gauges and a master cut-off red button to make sure they don't break. And people whose job it is to drive trucks up and down the length of it all day long looking for signs of ware or tampering. I can think of a hundred reasons why Canada putting this oil on a train or ship to China would be worse.

Is this a type of fence I am unaware of?
Damn pipelines are super interesting. This entire section that goes over the Denali faultline is on sliders in case of an earthquake. Imagine what this would look like during one.

You guys have to understand. These are probably the same type of people that think we should stop using oil completely right this second, regardless of the consequences to society due to the dramatic and sudden need for finding replacements for things like plastic, fuel, etc...
To them, any oil is bad because they think the less oil we produce/refine, the less oil we can use, the more people are forced into green technologies, however premature they may be in some important instances. Instead of trying to help solve green energy efficiency/practicality problems, they would rather lobby and protest against one of the main things that makes us a modern society at the moment.
Pipelines are probably one of the cleanest methods to transport crude. I think we should build it.
For fucks sakes protesting is 100% legal in the US, and living close to DC I cannot stress enough that there are very large protests all the time

I know a Capitol police officer, usually as long as the protesters aren't vandalizing property or protesting on the steps of a government building, then there isn't a problem, but seeing as how they tied themselves to a fucking fence, I can't say I'm surprised.
That picture makes me sad. Poor nature.
That pipeline is better than the pollution from other methods of transport and the infrastructure that would have been built to support it.
Plus it's designed around the idea of NOT fucking the environment up if something happens. Clearly it is superior.
