General Discussion default sorting by New Thread doesn't work with a larger page limit for threads

When the "new thread" sorting for General Discussion was first implemented several months ago, threads locked at about 50 pages so the most popular threads could keep reappearing on the front page.
But now that the thread size limit has been large enough to not change threads all that often, there's just a lot of single-topic, inactive threads cluttering up page 1.

These threads enjoy a burst of popularity as they emerge on the front page but eventually die out into the middle / end of the page and end up like this:

While more popular threads like the Firearms thread, Gay thread, MSPA thread and so on are pushed back all the way to page 3 along with threads that have no posts since April.
Now, one could install a userscript like GD Fixer but to anyone just visiting GD it just looks like a bunch of single-topic threads that run out of things to discuss.
General Discussion has always been a place to put threads discussing broader topics in general, so it doesn't make sense to ditch the threads that have been discussing things for several years on end. Please fix this.
One of the threads I keep visiting/posting in is on page SIX.
I have no idea how new folks are supposed to even find it in the first place.
i prefer that to dozens of chat threads on the main page, as the unique threads got pushed off the page pretty quick
solution: bring back the chat threads subsection
Threads should be bumped to the top when posted in so that the most popular generals are at the top while single issue threads die out. Does that go against the purpose of General Discussion?

The idea is you're supposed to remake the thread once it's fallen off the second or third page.
It's stupid, threads that had the last post 1 minute ago shouldn't be on page 2 or 3, and there's loads of them.

At what page number should they be remade?

oops i meant second or third

I know, I meant to ask something like how long does the thread have to be?
Doesn't matter how big the thread was, garry just wants people making more and new threads, so if a thread has slipped off the first page a fair ways then you can just remake it.
So doesn't this just mean we'll have 400 versions of the same thread and nobody will be able to find anything?
This sorting was intentional? Here I was thinking it was just left broken.

I'll be honest I lurked a shitton for the last 7 years and for the last 2 I thought GD was dead, but then I seen this thread.
Make chat threads subsection, get rid of weird sorting
Now GD is much less bad
I don't understand why anybody would think that General Discussion the way it is is a good idea.
