As the title states, convince me whether or not to buy the AMD Phenom II X4 970, I would like to know that I am making the right decision. Click the link for the exact specs.
I'm planning on purchasing this because I am in need of a performance upgrade. My motherboard is AM3 compatible, so everything should run smoothly.

Just posted specs in the OP. Also, I'm getting new RAM soon, so no need to comment on that.
Buy it and a heatsink, then OC it.
go with the 955 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&cm_re=phenom_ii_955-_-19-103-808-_-Product
there isn't a very large performance difference between it and the 965/970, nothing worth the price anyway, you can get the same results with a small overclock
also i wouldn't bother with any RAM, DDR2 isn't worth the cost right now and your board can't take DDR3
Yeah, at this point I'd look at the fastest 9xx series as pre-overclocked 955s. Save some money, get the less expensive Phenom II and overclock it yourself IF needed(it might not be).
Don't spend money on DDR2 now, unless you get a crazy deal from a friend or something.
Haha, you can get corsair value DDR3 4Gb(2x2gb) on Newegg.ca for $50, That is a insane deal already.
Also, if anybody wants 4GB(4x1gb) DDR2, you can have it for $20 over paypal.
You don't need a 970, get the 955 instead.

And have if you have any money left over go for this.

It's damn silent and performs well.

The Noctua is good and silent, but it's quite expensive. The Hyper212+ is the best cooler for it's price. It's about 1/3 of the Noctua.

Good point, it fits his budget perfectly.
Or get a Phenom II x6 T1055 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851&cm_re=phenom_ii_x6-_-19-103-851-_-Product . These can overclock to 4.0Ghz no prob, its cheaper than what your looking at, and it has two more physical core, oh yea and turbo boost is nice too.

+1 Agree.
[editline]13th December 2010[/editline]
The only time ratings will affect you, is if you have low self-esteem.
+1 Agree.
who gives a shit about ratings
A lot of people apparently. And I find it funny that doonbugie2 rated me dumb even though he "doesn't care".
he rated you dumb because he thinks you're dumb, simple.
and I'm pretty sure what people are saying is that people don't really care about what ratings they receive, for example, I don't care what ratings I get, but if I think someone's dumb then I'm going to rate that said person dumb

He just said he doesn't care about ratings, why would he go off and rate me dumb, that obviously shows he cares enough to rate me dumb.

I did it because I think you're dumb. I never said I cared about how it makes you feel.
