Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera has published his last interview, recorded in August, in which Cardinal Martini says: "The Church is tired... our prayer rooms are empty." Martini, once tipped as a future pope, urged the Church to recognise its errors and to embark on a radical path of change, beginning with the Pope. Thousands of people have been filing past his coffin in Milan, where he was archbishop for more than 20 years. The widely respected cardinal - a member of the Jesuit religious order - was often outspoken in his writings and comments on Church teaching, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome. He was a courageous and outspoken figure during the 22 years he headed Europe's largest Catholic diocese, our correspondent says.
If only he became pope.
this world, and religion in general, needs more people/leaders like him. rest in peace, good sir
What a shame
he knew too much-
Thread title made his death sound super suspicious. Maybe the guy would have been a good pope. Perhaps there is room for religion in modern society, if managed by institutions & churches that lived in the current time instead of resisting all change.
I believe there are a lot more higher ups within the catholic church that want major changes than you would think.
Too bad the area where the church has the most members nowadays, Africa, is under a massive trend of conservative radicalisation right now.
Too bad the area where the church has the most members nowadays, Africa, is under a massive trend of conservative radicalisation right now.
Well it's Africa. It hasn't really ever been the most up-to-date place.
I see conspiracy theorists having a field day with this....
The church in general really needs some serious reform if they want to continue in modern society
The church in general really needs some serious reform if they want to continue in modern society
Sadly, its members simply just seem to be holding onto old ideas, and its all just creating a bigger and bigger rift between them, and modern logic.
The church in general really needs some serious reform if they want to continue in modern society
I don't think they will care untill they start losing money
I don't think they will care untill they start losing money
They're losing believers => less people donating money. But I'm pretty sure they're going to keep swimming in dosh for the next five hundred years with all funds they currently have.
They are caught in a trap of their own making. You can't tell people "This is the word, we must follow it no matter what" then turn around later and say "Um, this word we told you the meaning of and how you must follow it? Yeah, well it actually means this now and we're telling you to follow that instead." It sort of discredits everything about your religion if you admit you were wrong all these years. So they keep plodding on, slowly losing followers because as time goes by those old ways look more and more irrelevant.
God punished him with death for speaking against the church. Blasphemer.
The logical part of me wants the bureaucracy, the religious and political system of the church to die out, but the historical part of me wants it to remain as a historical society, to maintain the religious artifacts and significant sites of its history, so we do not forget it. While religion has become more of a burden (in most cases) on certain aspects of this world, we cannot allow ourselves to forget the purpose of why it was created, or why people believe so fervently in it.
I can't imagine that he'd be a very top level player if he was constantly saying they were doing it wrong...
I can't imagine that he'd be a very top level player if he was constantly saying they were doing it wrong...
Well it is a Theocracy, it's not like one man can make the difference in that way.
The church in general really needs some serious reform if they want to continue in modern society
The problem is that many places in the world aren't a modern society, the Church clings to these spots.
Am I the only one on Facepunch who isn't a atheist?
Well it's Africa. It hasn't really ever been the most up-to-date place.
if only half of fp had a history lesson once in a while [editline]edit[/editline]
Am I the only one on Facepunch who isn't a atheist?
probably
Am I the only one on Facepunch who isn't a atheist?
There's a few Christians floating about but they're the sensible sort so we let them be. Usually.
Well it's Africa. It hasn't really ever been the most up-to-date place.
Africa is actually quite advanced, very advanced really. Then again most people are ignorant and just see Africa as the savannah and think there's nothing but lions, tribes and gangs there, because they can't look past the commercials they see on t.v. depicting the continent as a whole
There's a few Christians floating about but they're the sensible sort so we let them be. Usually.
Its more the people who want to talk about religion tend to be irreligious.
Am I the only one on Facepunch who isn't a atheist?
There are many who believe in some form of magic or another, so you're not alone.
There are many who believe in some form of magic or another, so you're not alone.
Why do people who don't believe in something have to be so disrespectful in regards to other people who choose to believe
Africa is actually quite advanced, very advanced really. On average, its countries have the lowest HDI values of any continent.
Why do people who don't believe in something have to be so disrespectful in regards to other people who choose to believe
Because.
Why do people who don't believe in something have to be so disrespectful in regards to other people who choose to believe
But come on. Earth in 6 days? Talking snake, burning bush, all that jazz? I don't care if people believe in a higher being, but the whole God has a hand in everything we do nonsense is what gets me. Just believe in the guy, and that's it. Leave the rest alone. Our laws basically have the commandments in them anyway
