When visitors enter the Mitsukoshi department store in Nihonbashi, the robot will greet them in Japanese before directing them to different floors in the building to locate goods they want to buy. After 21 April, she will be moved to the seventh floor of the department store, where she will act as a guide that shoppers can interact with until 5 May. So far, ChihiraAico has been programmed to communicate in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, English and Japanese sign language, and has been designed to help foster "effective communication between humans and non-humans". "It would be good if we can have [ChihiraAico] provide guidance, or recommend various things in Chinese, so that people can be looking around and think 'oh if Aiko is around, she can speak Chinese!' That's what I hope will happen," Hitoshi Tokuda, Toshiba's new business development division group manager, told Reuters.
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/tokyo-lifelike-humanoid-robot-woman-chihiraaico-directs-customers-around-department-store-video-1497340 Why must it always be the uncanny valley robots
japanese, they understand how to make cute robots, but still make these anyways [t]http://www.japaoemfoco.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Yuki-Taro-Robo-devorador-de-neve.jpg[/t] like this, a robot that shits bricks of snow, amazingly cute [editline]20th April 2015[/editline] still amazing
idk that chick leaning in to the robot in the first picture freaks me out more than the robot
i wonder if that kid knows
Personally I'm more creeped out by the girl on the right.
But can you fuck it?
Again, it probably would've worked better if it was vaguely human-ish in design like ASIMO. At least just something that doesn't make you feel like it's staring at you from across the room.
But can you fuck it?
This man This man is asking all the right questions
I wish they would stop trying to make robots look as realistic as possible.
I wish they would stop trying to make robots look as realistic as possible.
I've seen more realistic ones than this though.
the problem with these types of robots is the "uncanny valley," an effect that if something looks really close to looking real but not quite, it feels really disturbing to look at.
Eh, it's not that bad.
I wish they would stop trying to make robots look as realistic as possible.
Uncanny valley is nature's way of telling us to stop trying to emulate our own image using technology, or else bad things will probably happen.

At least just something that doesn't make you feel like it's staring at you from across the room.
Personally while I agree that vaguely human or masked human designs are better I think the ASIMO kind of robot is the problem. They are trying to copy humans rather than making them work as efficiently as humans. If a machine has to display emotion then you can do it as easily and more effectively with an emoticon on a screen than 200 motors in an unconvincing face. I don't think we should shy away from aiming for more humanoid robots but the methods so far have been really hamfisted and overly glorified.

That shit'll be commonplace. Then contrast with the lady holding her who probably never dreamed of this stuff as a kid. We live in a weird time.
Uncanny valley is nature's way of telling us to stop trying to emulate our own image using technology, or else bad things will probably happen.
Its nature's way of going "Holy fuck that person isn't one of us! Hiss at them and plot their demise!" This one though, actually not that bad. Something about it distinctly stands out as being unnatural to me, its subtle enough I can't say what, but obvious enough that my brain just goes "Yeah, that's not a person." instead of diving in to the valley.

Something about it distinctly stands out as being unnatural to me, its subtle enough I can't say what, but obvious enough that my brain just goes "Yeah, that's not a person." instead of diving in to the valley.
That's probably because they aren't using a material that diffuses light properly like human skin/muscle/blood.
What I don't understand is why people still insist on straddling uncanny valley when developing humanoid robots. I personally think that having some sort of non-threatening cartoonish approach is the best.
I always said the Japanese were trying to replace their people with robots...
ChihiraAico, a lifelike android robot built by electronics manufacturer Toshiba, is able to talk, sing, gesture and cry like a 32-year-old Japanese woman.
This is some Blade Runner bullshit.
But can you fuck it?
Its most likely similar to Disney anamatronics IE, its just a skeleton under that robe [editline]20th April 2015[/editline]
This is some Blade Runner bullshit.
Cry's like a 32 year old Japanese woman....who comes up with this shit
is there like an emergency evacuation plan if the robot starts crying
I'm hoping they're referring to "cry for help" and not actually "cry when customers aren't around".
ChihiraAico, a lifelike android robot built by electronics manufacturer Toshiba, is able to talk, sing, gesture and cry like a 32-year-old Japanese woman.
But she'd much rather drink.
id rather just have a robot that looks and sounds like a robot. if i wanted to see a real person i would like to see an actual person. plus it'd be radical
I'd rather have a holographic cute anime girl
I'd rather have a holographic cute anime girl
Ya but how quick would that get shut down by the political correctness police Holographic attendants aren't totally bad but the tech isn't there yet for good large sized projectors, the stuff they do in concerts wouldn't look good up close
Personally I'm more creeped out by the girl on the right.
"If I stay completely still, maybe that creepy carbon based lifeform will leave." On a more serious note, haven't there been more life-like versions before this one? This looks like a downgrade to some of the images I've seen of those japanese adroids.
