This isn't the first time this sort of thing happens. The Catholic Church (namely the pope and a few other people) get together with all sorts of scientists to figure out what the latest scientific discoveries mean for the Catholic faith.
The actual Church isn't as stupid as people think it is, but there are a lot of stupid people who are Catholic.

I was gonna say what they're overlooking really is that if they just incorporate extraterrestrial life into their belief system then to be honest that's one dogmatic oversight too far.
It basically shows up a lot of what they claim about the universe to be nothing short of wrong.
All the same I guess it's too much to hope for that they'll realise their own ignorance.
