Four died in hospital, the rest at the site of the accident, the spokeswoman said on Thursday morning, adding that the numbers were still provisional. Judges in Spain are responsible for recording deaths. The crash occurred as the train approached the north-western Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela at 8.40pm. A further 131 people were reported injured in the accident, the worst in Spain for 40 years. Reports said about 20 were very seriously injured.
I just woke up and saw this on TV, this is probably the biggest and deadliest crash we have had in a long time
Jesus. When two regular trains wreck it's a pretty substantial disaster, but two high-speed trains? That's just unimaginable. [editline]25th July 2013[/editline] I remember when that high-speed train wrecked in China. It was absolutely horrifying. holy shit, that's bad i hope everyone who survived ultimately makes it
One carriage was thrown five metres from the track and landed on the other side of a retaining wall beside a row of houses.
Jesus fuck imagine that coming towards your house.
The security cameras captured the moment of the accident, basically the train was going too fast and derailed after one of the wagons couldn't handle the curve at that speed and dragged the rest of the train into the concrete. Also, the huge motor of the train got expelled after the crash. Edit: Here it is.
Edit: Here it is.
Wow you can see it was the back of the second car/front of the third that already looked out of alignment with the tracks when it came around the corner
Edit: Here it is.
Jesus christ, just people going about their day when 78 are gone so spontaneously.

Just heard it on the radio. Horribl story. I wonder what the cause of all this was.
Holy fuck. That is a lot of people. They were just on their way to work :(
I'm from there and I took that train many many times. Could have been me, could have been my sister, could have been anyone. I'm glad my boyfriend didn't take that train yesterday and brought his car instead. I have seen images recorded with mobile phones and everyone there was just crying and shouting 'Oh my god, this is terrible, what has this man done?', 'It is hard to take a dead body out of a train and see his mobile phone is ringing', 'There is blood everywhere, there is at least ten people dead here, a mother with his baby on her hands, everyone is dead' I feel awful.
Terrifying :( reminds me of a train crash few years ago in my town where 19 people died. But this atleast 4 times worse. RIP.
I see how fast the train was going everywhere, but not how fast it was supposed to go at that curve. I wonder if the train controller was at fault, apparently it's most likely an accident (and some media appear to by trying to hint that it was a terrorist attack or something).
This is what happens when you hit almost 200 km/h going in a fucking curve driver is a fucking idiot this is all on him
Also some passangers report that they have seen an explosion before the train derailed, although that might as well be the trains fault. Then again, the train was reportedly checked for technical issues exactly the day before the accident. The driver also has 30 years of expirience, but has only worked this trail for a year.
I'm getting rated late, but I still don't know why it came to this. was it a technical problem? was he just driving to fast and didn't know better? I'd like to know more. the article only states
El Pais newspaper cited sources close to the investigation as saying the train was travelling at more than twice the speed limit on a sharp curve. The recommended speed is 80km an hour (50mph), and sources suggest the train was travelling as fast as 180km an hour.

This is what happens when you hit almost 200 km/h going in a fucking curve driver is a fucking idiot this is all on him
The train is designed to alert the driver when he's going too fast and if he doesn't react in a few seconds it automatically stops the train because the human could have had a heart attack or fallen asleep. So I don't think it is just the driver's fault.

Also, our PM looks like a fucking retard (yet again) and posts on his statement apologies for the earthquake victims (doing a copy&paste on a previous statement from another accident).
I read that and even posted that part of the article. Yet it still is unclear what the cause of that high speed was.
Well the driver can be an idiot for going more than twice the maximum speed, but there are automatic systems that don't let the train accelerate in that part in case the driver passes out or something, so that failed too. Lets not jump into conclussions before all the facts are known.
Uploaded to his facebook account (before it was deleted), assuring on the comments that it wasn't tricked and it was its real velocity. Also, the black boxes are now in hands of the police, which will soon clear up if it was a technical issue or some kind of manual override made by him to keep the speed. Driver has been 30 years driving trains, and 3 years doing the exact route everyday, so it looks like its the trains fault, right now they are trying to get the black box to know what happened
i'm at 100 km from there. [thumb] http://puu.sh/3Ls4p.png [/thumb] About the crash, don't they stop automatically?, also I saw kinda a small explosion before the crash, did anyone see it?.

The cause of this from looking at the video is obvious - excess speed. That train was travelling a hell of a lot faster than 50mph. What caused him to go so fast remains to be seen - no need to speculate.

There's a regular customer that visits the coffee shop that my girlfriend works at and his son was on the train. He's in intensive care at the moment and he has had to have his spleen removed or something like that. I'm not sure if he's alright or not but this entire thing looks brutal as fuck.
video of after the crash and before the ambulances http://elpais.com/elpais/2013/07/25/videos/1374741539_204701.html?autoplay=1 the cameraman is in complete shock
I thought high speed trains were pretty much fully automated? I can't figure out a reason why the driver would have the ability to speed up beyond the recommended speed. This is horrendous.
Saw this on the news 2 days ago, looks fucking horrible, and due to the summer holidays I think there were alot of travelers on, or something.
