More than 300 wild reindeer were found dead after lightning struck a central mountain plateau in southern Norway, authorities say.
A thunderstorm hit the Hardangervidda mountain plateau on Friday in the Telemark region, where game wardens had so far counted 322 dead reindeer, Knut Nylend, spokesman for the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK on Sunday.
Man that's really shocking.
Holy shit I did not know there could be chain lightning like that. That makes thunderstorms all the more terrifying
Terrible, but I hope Rudolf has survived! Or else I fear Christmas this year may be in trouble!
Mustove been a massive fucking bolt
article says that it's because reindeer have a habit of sticking close to each other, so the charge could affect that many.
I hope it had a hunting license.
"This is why you don't leave Thor alone with the mead cauldron, Heimdallr! Odin's going to be pissed!"
Did they harvest the meat?

Thor had enough of Santa's shit

Seriously though, it must be an awful thing to come across. I hope death was instantaneous for the reindeer. :(

I really wonder what they'll do with all of it.
That many corpses is going to stink really bad if left out after a while.
holyshit this sounds like some kind of mythological shit, we've pissed the gods off.
Jeeze that's some bad luck. Hope they find a way to deal with all those corpses. Think the meat is still good?

Probably just burn them.

They're using the corpses for research, specifically to see if they have traces of the Chronic Wasting Disease brain disease, which is basically the reindeer variant of mad cow disease, which fucks up their brain over time. This is because CWD was found in reindeer earlier this year.
It could be a pretty big deal if it turns out humans can contract CWD as well by eating certain kinds of reindeer meat. Etc.
So does this mean santa isn't coming this year?

Possibly the best use of them from this unfortunate incident.

As well as other animals. After all, the parts that almost certainly contain the infection would be the spinal cord and brain, which typically goes to animal fodder production.

Dammit Zeus, that isn't Greece!
Dammit Zeus, that isn't Greece!
It's Thor's realm
What the hell did these poor reindeer's do to piss off Thor?
Dammit Zeus, that isn't Greece!
Blaming him for what happened is Zeusless, in any case it was all Thor's fault
At least the meat is cooked
Filthy Sodomite Reindeer, serves them right.
Has this sort of thing ever happened to a massive group of people?
The yearly blood sacrifice to the ancient gods was sooner this year then expected
If only the deer weren't made of rein
