I'm soon going to be getting my first car which I'll actually be sharing with my dad and we'll both be driving it equally as much, so I was wondering if he was put as the main driver and me as a named, would that count as fronting? Is it really cheaper to have him as a main driver and me as a named, or the other way around? And lastly, do you build up a NCB as a named driver? Thanks in advance for helping anyway
1. If he owns the car to begin with, I think it would be ok, even if you both drive it equally, that you put him as the main driver. Fronting is something that is against the code with insurance companies, but most young people do it, as it is so expensive not too. Chances of getting caught are low unless you cause a problem or crash etc. 2. It'll always be cheaper to have your dad as the main driver as that is where the bulk of the premium is calculated, adding you will cost alot of money, either way, it wont be too cheap as UK insurance is ridiculously expensive for males, and especially someone of your age (I'm preusming 17-20 for a first car). 3. It depends. Some companies allow named drivers to build no claims bonuses, some don't; it really is down to each company. For example I know some companies like Churchill or Admiral used to offer NCB's for all drivers, but some just don't offer it, precisely because of the issues with fronting, where they end up having a 20 year old with 3 years no claims, who has been driving as a named driver under his parents, who never drive the car (classic insurance fronting). Hope this helps.
My friend who is on Direct Line has his dad as his main driver, he gains NCB but only with Direct Line, he can't transfer it to another company.
Ah thanks. Something else though, would it bring down the premiums further if I added my mum as a named driver too?
Yeah, pretty much anyone you add who would have lower premiums than you on your policy makes the price come down.
