Calling it now Episode 3 is going to be a movie lol.
This does not instill any confidence in me...
"Be careful what you wish for", in a nutshell.
Nice that we might be getting more Half-Life universe content, but I believe the chances of a movie ever doing the Half-Life experience justice - even if it's good by adaptation standards - are extremely slim.
I don't think either universe will make for a good movie, hope I'm wrong.
I feel the Half Life universe could make for a good film, just as long as it doesn't involve the actual game characters

At the very least they'll need a completely different narrative focus in order to have some hope of being good. The worst thing that they could possibly do is retread the plot of the games or include any of their protagonists in the script, that would end up extremely awkward on top of probably breaking established canon (or canon as experienced by the players).
Please at least don't make it live action.
silvester stallone as shephard
morgan freeman as eli
Will it have a scene where a metro cop confronts Barney, drops his gun and exclaims "Traitor" as his stunstick extends?
Ah yes, two movies based on games that haven't been touched in years centered around characters who never speak at all. A stroke of genius.
I could see Portal being made into a chill movie, honestly. With or without a focus on Chell as the protagonist.
Half-Life? Eh....
We don't even know what's the plot
"dead from the start"
Yeah I can see it with JJ Abrams being misinterpreted shit like star trek became for the masses, but star wars was a hit so there's always a new hope
it's too late to cash in on the portal and half life hype, just give us hl3 already you jerks
J J Abrams and Newell are good friends, and neither of them would want it to "suck".
I'm pretty sure that Valve will also have some hands into it and make sure that it won't turn out bad. I'm not talking about their latest decisions, but when it comes to developing games they still put a lot of work into it.

No one said they'd be based on Gordon or Chell.
A Portal movie about ratman or having it take place right before GlaDOS wakes up could be interesting. Half Life could just be from the perspective of other scientiest.
A half life movie taking place during the seven hour war would be interesting, I don't think a movie with Gordon or Chell as the main protagonist would work that well.
I think a movie 'inspired' by the half life universe (i.e. black mesa, the general story line) could work well. But trying to make a 1:1 attempt at a movie based on a video game would suck shit.
What if the Half-Life movie involved Shepard? It's unlikely he'll ever appear in the games again, but maybe they could put him to use in the seven hours war, or perhaps as part of early resistance days.
Honestly, I'd love if some old HECU guys were revealed as like, founding members of the resistance. (Somewhat) Well trained and some experience with dealing with alien life already.
I'd like to see some story take place between the nuking of black mesa and the arrival of the combine. I think it would give us that whole post-apocalyptic feel with the whole Orwellian feel.
The seven hour war would be a really lame movie IMO. It works more as something you hear about as opposed to something you witness. All it was is "humanity gets their asses beaten harder than ever before and surrenders". I feel like a movie about it would just end up being a boring-ass summer blockbuster disaster porn movie, but with invading aliens instead of a big-ass earthquake or some shit. Or more likely something super forgettable sci-fi schlock like Battle: Los Angeles.
The war wasn't the interesting part, it was what came afterwards that was interesting.
Remember that Valve actually declined Quentin Tarantino's script for a Half-Life movie because they didn't like it. If it's happening with Abrams, it means it's really good.

Why not? The Half-Life universe is interesting as fuck.

Why would it even be remotely related to Chell or Gordon.
All of valves games are quite narrative driven, they could easily translate into a movie, even without the "player"

Even the heavily gameplay orientated and focused ones like TF2 and L4D would probably make for some good movies.
This thread is reminding me of "Escape From City 17".

To be honest I'm having a hard time imagining any aspect of the Half-Life universe that doesn't sound like generic/overdone sci-fi when spelled out like an IMDB plot summary.
"Aliens invade Earth after an experiment in a secret government research laboratory goes horribly wrong" - Meh...
"When a combat unit specialized in anomalous environments is deployed to investigate an accident, a horrifying truth is revealed" - Meh...
"In a post-apocalyptic future, an underdog human resistance rises up against an oppressive regime" - Every B-movie sci-fi flick ever...
It feels like a good script would have to focus on something else WAY out of the beaten path.
Honestly, I don't think any part of the Half Life series would work as a movie. They're amazing games, but I just feel like they'd lose too much in the transistion. But when it comes to Portal, I think a short film based on Ratman, the fall of Aperture, and the Lab Rat comic could be cool as hell. But even then it'd be really hard to pull off and would be hard to make it interesting for people who don't already have an interest in the games.
It doesn't seem like a great base to work with, but then again they made movies for resident evil and hitman. And half-life and portal sure have a lot more going for it.
