UKIP MP: "Those on welfare should be banned from driving and use the bus instead"

A Ukip General Election candidate has been suspended after he said benefits claimants should be banned from driving to cut traffic - and take the bus to job interviews instead.

Yes, makes sense. Lets make it EVEN HARDER for them to get jobs. And then bitch about how they don't have jobs.
Totally 100% not a stupid thing to say.
Even my Spock avatar agree's.
So he's not an MP, he's a candidate. Really should change the title.
Also literally the funniest definition of "common sense" ever.
'i love cyclists but really i dont'
Often jobs require people to work at unsociable hours or in areas not well served by public transport, how would he propose they find work then? This is just another attempt to put the poor down.
Our car runs faster on tax payers money.
I will outrun the UKIP Gestapo with my extra tax-payer payed horse power.
A car can be incredibly expensive to drive and I don't entirely disagree with him.
We could remove 16 million cars from the road if women were not driving. Why should they need to when they should be keeping the house and taking care of the children like their husbands have [del]shouted at them to do whilst beating them[/del] asked?
I'd cycle everywhere if I didn't think there was a high chance of getting killed.

How does owning a car increase your chances of finding a job?

it's easier for me to deal with a car than a bus, and it's another mode of transportation that's available for me. being limited to bikes and bus's would really suck. I could potentially miss an interview and being 15 minutes early is VERY important.
however I don't live in the city though so note my bias, that probably is why I say this. But how does it not?
imagine not owning a car and having to drive 30, 60 minutes to get to work
it simply isn't going to happen if you rely on taxi's / buses / bikes can't always be used once you actually get the job.
How does owning a car increase your chances of finding a job?
Being able to easily reach workplaces that might otherwise be underserved by public transportation, mainly. Less important in more densely-populated areas, naturally.
How does owning a car increase your chances of finding a job?
I live in a forest, would take me a long time to get to any place of work without a car
How does owning a car increase your chances of finding a job?
Because without one you're relying on public transport / other people which might not be possible if the job is far away

A full driving license was required for my previous job. Lots of big business's have pool cars/hire cars that employees use to get around on company business. We're not talking about your average McDonalds job here but it's way more common than you think.
Bollocks. The absolute EASIEST way of getting a job is having a car. OK, they're usually shitty jobs, but having your own car really boosts your earning potential.
People on benefits are people with needs, not targets for shitty career politicians.

You can apply for jobs further from you residence, and apply to jobs that require you to drive (and provide your own vehicle) as part of the job for a start.

Have you ever had a job? It means you have reliable transportation dude, and you're not gonna be stuck when your train/bus/taxi or whatever breaks down or gets called off cause of shitty weather.
How does owning a car increase your chances of finding a job?
How does it not? It's another box on the application form ticked, you can go from an hour and a half on public transport to 25 minutes, hell if I wanted to get to the next town from me on public transport it takes at least 40 minutes yet by car you're looking closer to 10/15.
Wtf, how would this even be enforced - spot checks, police traps? How about making public transport free for job seekers?
how do these people even remember to breathe ("filthy immigrant jobseeker euro spending car driving non-common sense van rompuy muslim terrorist give me my job back i'm a rich wanker of a former banker essex man" air)
How does owning a car increase your chances of finding a job?
You can go wherever you want or need, whenever you want or need to be there. You're not limited by schedules, you're not fucked by strikes, you merely get in and go. It's probably the most easily recognizeable true freedom anyone in the western world has. You're only held back by the gas in your tank when you own a reliable car.
When I was unemployed last year my 'job' for months was basically to ferry my two mates (who can't drive) back and forth to work every day (145 miles in total) so they could save up enough money and get us out of the rural shithole we were in, and we succeeded. If this policy had been in place, it wouldn't have just been me out of work, it would have been my two mates as well. Thank fuck these shits aren't in power.
It kind of makes sense actually. Claimants get the bus free or reimbursed.
I couldn't really work out how I could ever afford a car without a job.

Dunno about where you live, but in my local area claimants could only get free transport at certain times, and it was also only after being on JSA for six months.
Plus he specifically mentions benefit claimants, but as far I'm aware the largest group of benefit claimants is people who work, many who absolutely require a car to get to work.
Cars are so expensive to drive, maintain, insure and buy here (look at how much petrol is taxed).
How would someone living off benefits afford to drive at all?
doesn't help that buses are fucking expensive these days
and unreliable

cheap cars and insurance for older people
even if you can't afford a car there is simply no way you can tell me you can't afford this if you own a home / live in an apartment unless you're screwed with debt and medical bills

I would legitimately use this too
even if you can't afford a car you should be able to afford something similar to a car that has a motor + is treated under the same laws
