Google Docs has always doubled as adequate online file storage, but it looks like Google might be creating a full-featured cloud storage service, with a Dropbox-like desktop client to match. A reader over at GeekWire discovered that the service, called Google Drive had been enabled for his account, providing a Docs-like view of all your cloud files and a link to "Install Google Drive". That's all we know right now, between that reader's discovery and a mess of rumors on the subject, but as always, we'll keep you updated as we learn more.[/release]

Google are taking over every aspect of my digital life.
EDIT:
Those rating late, sure there's been rumours floating around for a while but this article is about them confirming it. I should have made that more obvious in the title.
This has been a rumour for like 2 years
Hopefully it's actually coming out

It would be nice if this was combined with docs.
I use Dropbox a lot, and I already think it's pretty much perfect. So Google better add some nice stuff if they want it to compete with Dropbox.

More space would be nice.
the fact that it's google and it's all together already makes it more attractive than dropbox imo but at the same time i'm afraid of giving google too much power

I love dropbox for allowing me to have a mobile version of it and use my phone for all sorts of on the go digital storage.
But google lets me do that with docs too so once they've made their equal as connected and as stable, well then I can't say it's good news for dropbox.

They already have so much.

Would be neat if you'd get the same amount of space as you have on your Gmail account.

I like everything about Dropbox except the upload speed.
(And the download speed a bit)
I have 100 Mbps fiberoptic upload speed and still any large file takes 63 years to upload to Dropbox.
Other then that it's pretty much perfect.

whenever i upload a file to dropbox i only get a max of 200 kbps up and for some reason when i upload a big file it ties up my entire network even if it's hard plugged in to my cable modem

I think it's only fair they get paid for their services.
Obviously more free space would be nice but they do need some dosh to keep the servers going.

I was talking about Dropbox actually.
If Google gets fast servers and 5gb free space then sign me up.
Or I'm already signed up because I have a Google account.

I'm sure they do, but I still think 2gb free is a fair deal. It's not like they are evil or anything like most corporations seem to be now-a-days.
also im just nitpicky im sorry
google is a singular, in the same way the word "classroom" or "team" is singular even if they consist of many members and parts
the classroom IS working on their work
the team IS trying to win the game
google IS making a dropbox style cloud file-sharing service.
I like google and I don't mind this.

It's ironic because 'Google' derives from 'Googol' which is anything but singular.
I don't see a reason to switch away from dropbox, unless they invent something new

Got 7.5 gigs from the beta, took ages to upload the photos but worth it
wait what how did you get 7.5 gb i thought you can only get a max of 5 gb from the beta
or did you get 5 gb for a grand total of 7.5?
What's nice is that the amount of space will increase overtime
I call bullshit on that screenshot
1. File types are all Google Docs supported filetypes
2. The interface is more or less identical to Google Docs
2 minutes in Chrome + 1 minute in MS Paint:

There have been screens like this before
Can't wait for this to go public.
EVERYONE is making a Dropbox-like cloud file sharing service
Goddamnit our uni email only accepts internal emails, and it's always in the <surname.name>@student.ua.ac.be format...
EVERYONE is making a Dropbox-like cloud file sharing service
The more competition the better!
Unless Apple patents it or something stupid :v:
