Republican House Rep Says Poverty Level Kids Should Work for Their Free Lunches
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) wants kids to learn early in life that there's no such thing as a free lunch. To make sure they absorb that lesson, he's proposing that low-income children do some manual labor in exchange for their subsidized meals.
On Saturday, Kingston, who is vying to be his party's nominee in Georgia's Senate race next year, spoke at a meeting of the Jackson County Republican Party about the federal school lunch program.
Under that program, children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty line are eligible for free meals. Students from families with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level can receive lunches at reduced prices.
But on Saturday, Kingston came out against free lunches, saying that children should have to pay at least a nominal amount or do some work like sweeping cafeteria floors.
How about getting him off his fat ass and sweep the floors himself?
He'd probably bribe someone else to do it.
When you are poor and depressed the last thing you want to do is work your ass off for some cheap ass food just because some senate douche bag feels like you should be doing so, I bet he never had this lesson in his life, what a waste of oxygen.
I used to work at my school's cafeteria in exchange for free lunches, but that was because I wanted to... If you really can't afford the ridiculous 5 dollar a day lunches, then forcing you to work for it is kinda whack.

Shit like this is why the Republican party will eventually dissolve into nothing once these old turd burglars die off.

How many congressmen and senators are poor?
Oh that's right
Slave labor, asshole.
Force the kids to come to school, force them to sit in class all day with no disruptions, force them to work for their food, and then send them home to starve in the evenings, just so they can rinse and repeat.
I find no fault in this.
This sounds like something that would be done for rich kids than anything else, imo.
It's still a terrible idea, though.
You shouldn't make a child work for something as mundane as a school lunch. I wouldn't be opposed to a voluntary work for free lunch program for all income levels though.
I will say that in some cases, the threshold for subsidized lunches should be rolled back. At my old high school, around half of the student body qualified for free or reduced lunch. I had a friend who would get a free lunch every day and then buy an extra one.
His idea could actually be done though, if it weren't for the fact that American school lunches are about worthless.
Pizza is not a proper food, especially the shit they serve over there, let alone all the other stuff.
Some schools might have proper food at them though, but that's just how I've heard the situation to be.
[Breaking] Republicans confirmed as spineless space slugs more at 11 o'clock news.
Imagine the reaction Pope Francis would have about it, he would call the congress Pagans and not true Christians, I can imagine the shitstorm it would cause.

It doesn't matter how good or bad the food is you shouldn't punish children for being poor.
fuck you babies, learn to pick yourselves up by your bootstraps.
I am pretty sure there are laws to prevent stuff like this.
Stupid man.
Doesn't he know the poor can just buy more money?
Why just the poor kids?
I'm genuinely interested in the mindset of conservatives who have ideas like this. What mental dysfunction do they suffer from to say things like this in public, that poor children in public schools should have to sweep floors to get lunch? I know the GOP sets the bar pretty low but surely you can't be so stupid as to launch an anti-federal-spending measure based on food for poor schoolchildren? This guy is an embarrassment to my state.
"But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch? Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria -- and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money. But think what we would gain as a society in getting people -- getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch," he said.
Oh, it's not about saving money at all. He's not even taken up that flimsy cover to push his social agenda. It's just some bullshit about a "work ethic".

The Schools should be private and run by corporations. Poor kids can attend by working in the factory next to the school or even learn in the factory itself through experience.

When I was in High School, for a while they had a free and reduced lunch program, then after a while they decided "poor children were being discriminated against for getting free lunch", so they made it free for everybody. They could still pay for more lunch though, so I would go through and sometimes get enough lunch to feed like 8 people and distribute it around.
To be honest if these kids didn't want to be poor then maybe they should have worked harder in school and gotten better jobs.

It depends on the school system, TBH.
Arkansas schools disbanded any idea of "junk food" and instead gave healthy choices for main courses I.E. wheat macaroni, "faux" burgers that included some disguised fruits, etc.
Although I don't see how "free food for work" can work for children in any way possible.
Just have to say, maybe things like "republicunt" and "libtard" aren't the healthiest for rational discourse

Yes.
It is deeply insulting to women and the mentally disabled to compare their anatomy and conditions to a hard-right crazy party :v:.
I hadn't heard "republicunt" before. Kinda appropriate, but yeah, the smooshed up words are dumb.
This work for lunch thing seems like a shit idea. Other kids are going to use that as a weapon to further belittle and hassle the kids involved. Besides teasing them for being poor, they will be making deliberate messes and calling for their "boy" to come clean it up. Because school kids are mean as fuck.
If they go through with it, they better hand out kevlar, cause that's how people get shot.

the fuck?
Does he realize how many kids are on the free lunch program?
I'd love to see him find work for half the school.
[editline]20th December 2013[/editline]
Hell there are entire schools that are on the free lunch program even
If they seriously are gonna force poverty kids to work for their lunch, they sure as hell better greatly improve the quality of the food offered. Not saying I agree with making kids work for their lunch, just that it had better be something better than what I remember school cafeteria food being. And what next? Making the poverty kids work for toilet paper usage in the rest rooms?
Grew up poor, I learned the meaning of hard work on my own, thanks but no thanks senator Fuckface. Seriously though, school lunches were one of the greatest things of my childhood, except on those days where the main was mozzarella sticks with MEAT SAUCE HELL YES. (sorta kinda sloppy joe mix) Not because they sucked (they were delicious) but because you needed to fucking barricade your table against thieves and other nefarious sons of bitches. Some goth kid stabbed me with a fork so I would hand mine over, and to this day I don't understand why he did that since he was lactose intolerant.
I counter-attacked right while he was drinking out of his juice carton which sprayed all over when my trapper keeper crushed it against his ginger face. This secured the mozzarella sticks as mine, and nobody dared fuck with me (that day) for I knew how to wield a Wal-Mart trapper keeper like a Teutonic knight would wield a mighty zweihander.
I really love mozzarella sticks. :l
it's worrying how the people in charge of running the country can come out with such shit
Honestly. Its a bit silly that we have poor children in this country. Especially when these children are filled with valuable organs that can be used to fund the various social programs people desire.
