• Thousands of students protest in London - Police threaten to use rubber bullets if necessary

Thousands of students have been protesting in London against eduction fees and privatisation of Universities, however Police have warned they will be using rubber bullets if necessary after criticisms they lacked power, control, and resources during this year's riots. Security in the city was very high with 4,000 officers controlling the crowd. Students were also given leaflets, telling them if they left the designated areas, they would be arrested. BBC correspondent Mike Sergeant was with the protesters as they neared St Paul's and the City. "The march is moving slowly, sedately even. It is quite extraordinary the way it's being policed," he said. "It's the most tightly-controlled march through London that I have ever seen. Very little opportunity for protesters to break away - an enormous contrast to last year." The student protest, organised by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts, is against the government's plans for a market-driven higher education system. "We are being told by a cabinet of millionaires that we will have to pay triple tuition fees," said campaign leader Michael Chessum. BBC Education Correspondent Sean Coughlan is at the march. At 1325, he said: "Chanting student protesters are going through London's Theatreland, lots of noise, lots of cameras and lots of police. It feels less predictable than last year's protests, but so far no trouble." As the demonstration moved through Trafalgar Square, some protesters broke away from the march to set up tents. They set up about 20 pop-up tents at the base of Nelson's column, but have now been moved on by the police. The police had said they would arrest those who refused to move, on the grounds that they had broken away from the authorised route of the march. Paul Clark, director of policy at Universities UK, which represents higher education institutions, says universities will not be damaged by increased competition "I think that the level of private involvement in higher education at the moment is relatively small and is likely to remain that way for the forseeable future although we know there are plans to, to change this," he said. "But we also know that competition is a fact of life for universities. They compete for part-time students; post-graduate students for research funding and for international students. So this is not something that we should necessarily be afraid of, as a sector."
I am not paying 9 Grand a year, fuck off government you greedy cunts. On the bright side I hope it works and no idiots start creating problems.
There'll always be a couple of troublemakers.
It's like they're trying to force us to become even more uneducated. Paying 30-50k to get a university degree, with another 15k of debt and then trying to save up enough to pay for a house all with a £15,000 salary? What a fucking joke

Example, Fordham University in the bronx near me is the lowest 35k USD (25k euro) PER YEAR
Welcome to being a higher educated student in the United States.
Nobody in the world should be subject to the absolute farce that is American post-secondary
This is all I'm thinking when I read the article. "Wahh". We've pretty much been raised thinking that we have to be financially prepared for college. Most people aren't and get loans. But still. Plus Scholarships exist.
I also like how UK cops threaten violence before the protests even begin, stay classy UK

I like how the police are threatening to use rubber bullets against these protesters, even though the riots in august were like 5x bigger then this...
Guys can we all just get a long? Look, some people are born in poor families, sure, but they want to make a difference and earn some money, in order to do that they have to achieve high education and they are willing to. But the problem is is that some can't really afford enough money to begin such an education in the first place so there's no helping them.
The fuck? What kind of headline is that? "Thousands of students protest in London - Protesters threaten to riot if necessary" - Does that sound appropriate too?
Welcome to being a higher educated student in the United States.
What a terrible thing to say. You can't make that comparison. Just because you pay more, doesn't mean it is the same situation. Not only are living expenses more in the UK, but they've always had lower (equivalent) prices than in the US. It makes sense that they want to retain them. Just because it's higher somewhere else doesn't mean they don't have a right to complain. Every time gas prices skyrocket in the US people complain like crazy, but according to you we shouldn't complain since other places have gasoline more expensive than we do. It's all having to do with a combination of factors.
Clegg should've just said no like he originally intended and stand his ground, now he just doesn't care since this is the most power the LibDems have had for god knows how many years
How about taking a hint from Estonia and making education free? Why the fuck you have to pay that much anyway?
How about taking a hint from Estonia and making education free? Why the fuck you have to pay that much anyway?
Government will take whatever the fuck they can so they can spend it on horse shit to put on their garden.

Since the police are being extra cautious in order to avoid criticism of not taking the situation seriously, they're going to be criticized for being too harsh.
How about taking a hint from Estonia and making education free? Why the fuck you have to pay that much anyway?
It is all put on a student loan that you only have to pay off once you're earning over a certain threshold, so I don't really see the problem with the fees.
I also like how UK cops threaten violence before the protests even begin, stay classy UK
Did you not hear about the UK riots a few months ago?
Wait so they refused to use rubber bullets against the rioters, but are happy to use them against students?
I'm digging all the protests taking place around the entire world. I'm not an anarchist, but I think it is really neat that people are taking a stand for what they want instead of just taking it in the ass.
lol, brits whining about having to pay for school Try getting an education in the US.
Did you not hear about the UK riots a few months ago?
Uh those were separate
lol, brits whining about having to pay for school Try getting an education in the US.
If you're going to use the "you have no right to whine because it's worse in other places" argument American's should have no right to protest wall street because the quality of living is worse in Somalia. [editline]9th November 2011[/editline]
Uh those were separate
They're just worried it'll happen again, considering the riots started after a protest. I highly doubt the police would use rubber bullets against a normal protest.
Nobody in the world should be subject to the absolute farce that is American post-secondary
Thanks for the dumbs guys. I don't want to be part of the fucking farce. It was meant as massive 'God dammit'. [editline]9th November 2011[/editline]
What a terrible thing to say. You can't make that comparison.
I am not paying 9 Grand a year, fuck off government you greedy cunts. On the bright side I hope it works and no idiots start creating problems.
Meh, it's unlikely you'll have to pay it all back anyway.
Only the rich can learn
Soon we'll be back in the middle ages where only the filthy rich could read and write.
Uh those were separate
I wasn't saying they were related. The point I was making was that the police are being cautious this time, in case this protest turns into more riots. edit -
Wait so they refused to use rubber bullets against the rioters, but are happy to use them against students?
I believe they need permission to use rubber bullets, and they weren't given permission last time.
