One of the newest social networking sites turns out to be not so new after all. MySpace is back for Round 2, and it has been renovated and refocused. It has been a couple of years since MySpace was considered a serious contender in the social networking arena, but investors believe that the brand still has value. The social networking site was purchased by Chris and Tim Vanderhook for only $35 million, a deeply discounted price compared to the princely $500 million that NewsCorp paid in 2005. Instead of positioning itself as a direct competitor of Facebook, the new MySpace actually encourages its users to login using their Facebook or Twitter accounts, implying that it is simply a way to enhance the social media experience. MySpace has teamed with the mega pop star Justin Timberlake to put a new face on the company, and is focusing on providing a unique user experience in the music space. The goal is to attract artists from all genres with the opportunity to connect directly with their fans, as well as allow fans to interact with their favorite artists. The site is not restricted to musicians, since photographers, designers and other artists are encouraged to join and display their work.
Many experts agree that the decision not to take on the social media giant Facebook is wise. With hundreds of millions of users that have invested years of their lives storing photos and conversations on Facebook, it seems unlikely that users would abandon their profiles and create them on a brand-new, untested site.
There are many beautiful, well-designed websites that already do a great job filling the space that MySpace is actively pursuing. While MySpace is extremely well-designed and has all the features that anyone listening to and exploring music online could want, it might be walking the thin line between something great and too much of a good thing. MySpace has advantages that other music sites don’t, such as licensing agreements that date back several years, from the times when the company was in a good position to leverage excellent deals.
In order to join the new MySpace, you have to request an invite from the site. They are rolling it out by invite only, which was a very effective strategy for Gmail. While no one can tell for sure whether former MySpace users will be willing to give the site another chance, it is true that there are tens of millions of new internet users who were never exposed to the previous site. Only time will answer the $35 million dollar question of whether MySpace can finally be revived.

Sorry about the bad-ish source. The new MySpace has started doing pre-launch invites to let people check it out. I just got one of these invites in my email - I signed up for it a few months ago. And I've got to say, it looks slick and is pretty cool. They've designed it so you can actually log in with your Facebook and Twitter accounts (a good move, seeing as the userbases on Facebook and Twitter won't want to drop their things and switch - they've invested too much information and time into their facebook accounts now).
Here's a shot of the homepage:

Basically, it is really elegantly laid out, and it has a twitter/facebook status-style feed on the right where your "connections" can post stuff. At the bottom is their music player which is all through the site - you can add any songs, albums and videos to your queue.
Also, there's a bunch of different areas, including your own profile (of course), creating your own mixes, and more. They have a bunch of interactive tutorials to help you if you don't know what you're doing:

Overall this is really cool, so check it out when you can!
Edit: Guess I should add the url just in case: http://new.myspace.com
"If we can't beat them, we shall combine the two."
That's the same exact color scheme as youtube.
Looks like Grooveshark.
Looks nice, might just turn into Google + though.
The answer to the title: No
Looks like Chrome
doubt it. The only thing I liked about myspace over facebook (and what kept me from jumping into facebook from the start) is how easy it is to set up a band page with music right in your face. Being in the music scene it was almost mandatory to have a myspace and myspace was the key way to find if a band name was already taken lol.
It looks really gorgeous but I don't think it'll beat Facebook or twitter
myspace had its time and Facebook offered a much cleaner, faster experience. This may of been too late but we'll wait and see

The article mentions that MySpace isn't really attempting to compete with facebook, but that it's something that you have alongside it rather than fighting to pull people away (hence logging in with Facebook, for instance). Analysts in the article says it's wise because it would be dumb to try to compete with Facebook like they used to.
invite only is a good idea, but keeping it invite only and overtly exclusive for too long, like google did, is a guarentee for failure

with the way those "timeline featured story" shit is going, it isn't long before Facebook turns into an ad-ridden cesspool.
one thing that I love about myspace is the ability to customized my page to whatever and make it look unique then anything else out there that appeals my taste, although the bad part of this is extra load time for certain people who don't have fast internet.
I used to get into myspace, hell it was my first social networking site considering alot of my friends are there before facebook got big and my friend migrated over there. I don't care much of facebook and don't do much social networking anymore because i don't get to talk to alot of people or people willing to talk to me.
Looks like github.
Sweet, I got an invite.
It's really cool in the way that it really opens you up to all kinds of new music. If you go on an artists' page, for example, it shows all of their songs that you can play in the player, and a big menu of similar artists, people that inspired the artist and more.

so it's like trying to compete with soundcloud or like spotify etc.?
If so that's pretty cool
why is the design the exact same thing as SoundCloud lol

I like that kind of design scheme, feels like a combination of metro and holo
[editline]5th December 2012[/editline]
when you compare the too, soundcloud is grey and orange and myspace is grey and black
one has more colour than the other
yes the color schemes are indeed different upon further inspection
I don't think it looks THAT much like SoundCloud, more like Grooveshark.

looks like they're trying to compete with not only grooveshark but probably spotify as well
how good is the sound quality?
As a beta tester for both soundcloud and now myspace, I have to say they are really nothing alike.

Sound quality is very good, no lag either. *Also, if you open multiple myspace windows it doesn't overlap the music (the player is universally calibrated to the same time I guess).

so it's like soundclouds fast loading thing?

holy shit that's pretty cool
All someone has to do is to make one social site that intergrates all of them. The issue is that if im on myspace and i have a friend on facebook i have to login to facebook. Someone needs to make a nice interface that allows and combines Myspace and Facebook into one.
Easy planning wise, not sure coding wise
1) Login to your myspace and facebook through this social intergration site
2) it pulls status updates and puts them in its own interface design making it look like one social website

Something like Yoono?
I've never gotten into hybrid social networking sites that combine everything
looks like Google+
Looks really nice for finding music/sharing music.
