Sad news from Greece – Loukanikos, the valiant dog who faced down Greek riot police during the height of the eurozone crisis, has died. Greek media report that Loukanikos (Greek for sausage) passed away peacefully, having retired from protests in 2012. Loukanikos began hitting the headlines in 2010, when the stray hound began appearing in the front line of anti-austerity protests. Athens journalist Damian Mac Con Uladh reports that Loukanikos suffered from his years on the front line. According to Avgi journalist Petros Katsakos, the dog’s health was adversely affected by tear gas and from being kicked from police, forcing him to “retire” from active protest about two years ago. “He was on the couch sleeping, when suddenly his heart stopped beating,” Loukanikos’ carer told Avgi. At the height of his fame, Loukanikos even feature in Time Magazine’s review of 2011 (full details). Loukanikos ‘retired’ in autumn 2012, around the time that the eurozone crisis was easing. He swapped tear gas and riot shields for a gentler life with an Athens family, who offered“all the care, love, food and vaccinations” a dog could could need.
The Guardian [t]https://libcom.org/files/images/76fktuydrsdjyrti87g.jpg[/t][t]https://libcom.org/files/images/afl4ro84rja48r4afa.jpg[/t][t]https://libcom.org/files/images/dog%202.jpg[/t][t]https://libcom.org/files/images/dscn5053.jpg[/t][t]https://libcom.org/files/images/loukanikos.jpg[/t][t]https://libcom.org/files/images/Loukanikos_beaten1.jpg[/t][t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BzfzZpxCEAA79LJ.jpg[/t][t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bzf4PRNIMAAtOYL.jpg[/t]
It's pretty remarkable that this was even a thing; the poor dog must've been treated badly by someone in riot gear and thought of them as a predator or something.
What a chill dog. Rest in peace and I hope you can continue walking around more rioters wherever you are now.
Wow; I remember the thread on FP back when the dog was still doing this. I'm happy a family took him in before he was killed at the protests. Sucks that he had a shorter life span due to tear gas, but that dog definitely would have brightened my spirits had I been a protester. rest in peace riot dog

Literally one of the most badass animals ever. RIP :c
I like the part where he retrieves the smoking tear gas grenade and brings it back to the riot police.
You want a medal or something?
I want a medal because my name comes from the greek word for sausage. Also in the french version of Pokemon Diamond Lucas' name is Louka You play as a sausage in Pokemon Diamond
Badass dog r.i.p
Reminds me of classical art where the same dog would appear in multiple paintings.
