the fuck is all this gimmicky shit about having a phone that works for more than one day
i need my smartphone as thin as paper, screw batteries
Is this coming to the US?
The other week I was thinking about when smartphones are gonna become cheap as fuck, soon something like this is gonna be as much a relic as these

For some people it's essential to have it last as long as possible, for example if you use it a lot for your work.
Is this coming to the US?
I'm guessing it's not their primary market for this particular phone; they're going all-out on enticing the developing world with durable and long-lasting phones.
They actually look pretty stylish. Simplistic and beautiful - I'll take 10! (I'm also a drug dealer)
Wait, says on the bottom of the article:
"The Asha 501 will be available in Asia Pacific, India, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Europe starting June 2013 for an unsubsidized cost of £65 ($99), a Nokia spokesperson told ABC News."

Already is, bub. I still have my first generation Samsung Gravity and everytime I whip it out, people are like "what the fuck your phone is so old." Because literally EVERYONE has an iphone or smartphone now. It's crazy. They don't understand how i could have such an "old" phone.
goddamnit...
Do I get a Lumia, this or that other one that was resistant to everything? Theres so much choice!

Not that unusual in the US to be honest, since you get super super cheap subsidies. But non-smartphone that are 5+ years old are still incredibly common in Europe.
What OS is that running?

Nokia's OS made for the phone. Doubt it would run Windows Phone or Android or anything with the 64MB of ram it has.
Wi-fi? That's really really cool. I'll eye this phone, been using a dumbphone since March and it's been a refreshing experience.
Had an android phone before and while it has a lot of really cool features and great apps, I use my phone for communication or music/podcasting, and it was frustrating to have to charge it every single day just to accomplish these tasks.
Now I'm able to go whole weeks without plugging to the wall (or the PC via MicroUSB), the only missing features I miss is e-mail and fetching podcasts automatically. Really hope this phone has that, with a good battery life.
What OS is that running?
Some custom new OS from Nokia, developed exclusively for the budget Asha series of devices, of which the 501 is the first.
Is this coming to the US?
doubt it, just like the Nokia 301 (which I really wanted), it's not available in the US.

I understand that it's a budget phone but holy shit is this bad.

Perhaps that's all current battery tech can support sensibly.
For $50 more I think a Firefox OS smartphone would be a better option, if 48 days of standby doesn't matter that much to the buyer.
Well fuck I predict a huge success. This looks like the perfect phone for your average household who don't know shit about smartphones and are out of cash.

Doubt it. It isn't being released internationally (so far), the screen resolution and ram are shit, and it will lack apps that people want to use. Picking up a cheap android phone would probably be 10x better.
Battery life doesn't matter as much as people make out.
I just put on my charge before I go bed

It is when I'm away from a USB port for a few hours longer than usual and my phone craps out right when I really need it.
I'm damn lucky I carry a laptop around with me to get my phone going again if I really need it.
You should buy a second battery or a portable charging kit, shit's handy.
I use one of these for the car:
