Democrats restore references to God, Jerusalem in platform September 05, 2012 (Politics section) FOX
The Democratic Party has restored references in its official platform to "God" and to Jerusalem as the recognized capital of Israel. The move comes after some had complained that the platform approved Tuesday omitted those references, which were included in the 2008 platform. Many in the audience booed after the convention chairman, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, ruled that the amendments had been approved despite the fact that a large group of delegates objected. He called for a vote three times before ruling. The party reinstated language from the 2008 platform that said "we need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential." The platform also now includes what advisers said was Obama's personal views on Jerusalem.
source: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/05/democrats-restore-references-to-god-jerusalem-in-platform Convention floor chaos: Democrats alter platform, disagree September 5th, 2012 (blog, Politicker) CNN
In a rare display of just how quickly a tightly scripted national political convention can unwind, Democrats on Wednesday struggled to complete a voice vote amending their party platform to include language referring to Jerusalem and God. It took three attempts from Democratic National Convention Chairman Antonio Villaraigosa before the platform was amended, and a loud chorus of delegates yelling "no" met each attempt to pass the changes by voice vote. Observers were dubious - at best - as to whether the affirmative votes outweighed those in the negative, much less reached the two-thirds vote required. Regardless, the chairman ruled in favor of the amendments. The change was proposed by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland immediately after the convention was gaveled into order on Wednesday. "I am here to attest and affirm that our faith and belief in God is central to the American story and informs the values we've expressed in our party's platform," Strickland, who chaired the party's platform committee, read. "In addition, President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and our party's platform should as well." With the language read before the delegates, Villaraigosa asked if there was any further discussion. His question was met with silence. The Los Angeles mayor moved then to the voice vote. "All those delegates in favor say aye," Villaraigosa said. A loud chorus of "ayes" ensued. "All those delegates opposed say no," he continued. Loud "nos" came from some of the delegates. Villaraigosa initially began moving forward in the proceedings, but stopped himself to re-take the voice vote. "Let me do that again," he said. "All of those delegates in favor say aye." Again a loud chorus of "ayes" reverberated in the convention hall. "All those delegates opposed say no," he said to a wave of "nos." At this point, Villaraigosa appeared confused. A woman emerged on stage, and the podium microphone captured her saying "they're going to do what they're going to do." Trying for a third time, Villaraigosa said "I'll do that one more time." With similar-sounding amounts of "yeas" and "nos" coming from the crowd, Villaraigosa declared, "In the opinion of the chair, two-thirds have voted, the motion is adopted and the platform has been amended as shown on the screen."
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/09/05/convention-floor-chaos-democrats-alter-platform-disagree/
Democrats have no spine. If Republicans criticize you for not having enough evangelical/pro-Israel groveling, the proper response is NOT to say "Sorry, we'll fix that right away please don't say mean things anymore". The proper response is to say "Fuck you, you're the theocratic party in this country and we don't think Palestinians deserve to be treated like this." Does the GOP change their platform when you complain about them wanting to end Medicare? Fuck no.
God damn it
Democrats have no spine
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
99% is a better guess and that's still a low ball.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
We're talking about the politicians themselves, not the democratic population.
At first I was disappointed, but then I looked at Glaber's title and laughed heartily for the 5th time.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
Well, I refer to the party leadership. Democratic voters hold to their beliefs as tight as anyone, but actual Democratic politicians are notorious for caving on the issues.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
95% of Facepunch supports the Democratic Party over the Republican Party. That doesn't mean they are a Democrat, only that they aren't completely heartless.
There is no way i'm voting for Romney, so that means I am voting Obama. Lesser of the two evils I guess.
Its funny cause Deval Patricks speech was about how Democrats have to stand up for themselves.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
Pro democrat maybe. Almost half of Facepunch isn't even American.
At first I was disappointed, but then I looked at Glaber's title and laughed heartily for the 5th time.
You are welcome fine sir
It can be taken as a very bad thing, omitting the personal views of one people and adopting and representing the views of another. While I support it, it would further the "No God With Gays" or "No Gays With God" viewpoint that a lot of people are going to have with the election and the democrats would lose a fair few numbers.

I don't like the Dems, but they at least won't murder us.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
it's a international forum man [editline]5th September 2012[/editline] no
Isn't like 95% of facepunch fanatic liberals?
fixed
It's amazing, even with a dual source, Glaber still manages to have an inaccurate and sensationalist title. Thank you for leaving out the most important part of that entire thing, the fact the ENTIRE convention booed and showed negativity to it.
fixed
I think you have no idea what you're talking about.
sorry, the story was fresher than a new car at the time. i think this is the title you're looking for: "Convention floor erupts as Dems restore references to God, Jerusalem in platform"
Wow what the fuck? Despite the chair desperately trying ram the amendment it, there was no way there was a 2/3rds majority of people saying "I" Even the speaker tried so hard to emphasize "I" like "All those in favor.... SAY I!!!!!!" whilst on contrary for no "[SUB]allthoseagainstsayno[/SUB]" Oh AIPAC.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
95% are too young to vote anywhere.
I think you have no idea what you're talking about.
I've been coming to this site for a bit more than 6 years, I think I've come to known its userbase by now. But you don't really need to be here for that long to see it.
*sigh* A nice progressive push and it collapses into a mass of everything wrong with American politics.
95% are too young to vote anywhere.
quick prove this man wrong! to the disagrees fellow facepunchers !
Probably the biggest reason they put it back in was because, if they did, they would probably lose a chunk of their public support. Maybe not a huge one, but enough to make a difference on the ballots. There are many people in the US who are loyal to both parties who consider their religion to be a large part of their political choosing. Not to mention this would cause a lot of churches and their leaders to begin denouncing the democratic party. It may not make much sense, sure, but take my grandmother for example. She is a very pious individual, but she is incredibly loyal to the democratic party. If God was taken off of the party platform, there's a chance she might switch her choice of vote.
99% is a better guess and that's still a low ball.
Willing to bet less then 99% are american.
Isn't like 95% of facepunch Democrat?
Probably more like facepunch doesn't like republicans. Either way, why would that make the democrats immune to criticism?
I don't understand what the big deal is. It's a minor religious reference, nothing more.
