A sniper has shot dead Al Jazeera freelance reporter Mohamed Al-Massalma in the southern Syrian province of Deraa, the Qatar-based media network has said. "The Syrian journalist, 33, used the pseudonym of Mohamed Al-Horani. He was shot with three bullets, during covering the fights at the front lines in the town of Busra Al-Harir in the countryside of Deraa." the news channel said in a press release on Friday. An Al Jazeera Media Network spokesperson affirmed that "targeting its collaborating journalists and crews will not change the editorial method and guidelines adopted by the network since it was launched 16 years ago for the sake of delivering the truth". Before joining Al Jazeera, al-Horani was an activist in the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. Targeting journalists He was the second reporter to be killed by snipers in 24 hours in strife-torn Syria. On Thursday, French journalist Yves Debay was shot dead in the northern city of Aleppo, watchdog the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. French President Francois Hollande offered condolences for the slain journalist. Debay was covering clashes between rebels and forces loyal to President Assad when he was shot by a regime sniper. Syrian rebels reportedly brought him across the border to Turkey, where a foreign ministry official said he was pronounced dead on arrival at the state hospital in the border province of Kilis early on Friday. According to an AFP news agency count and the Paris-based rights group Reporters Without Borders, at least 20 professional journalists have been killed in Syria's 22-month conflict, alongside many civilians who have filmed or otherwise recorded the violence for the outside world.
Source
Shit... That was disturbing. How many journalists have been killed by Assad's regime?
Oh wow
Fuck, the way his body starts rolling like that is so fucking unnerving...
Fuck, the way his body starts rolling like that is so fucking unnerving...
He was rolling in pain, he didn't die instantly
Damn, hit 3 times and he was running. That's just shit luck
*snip* Now build me a boxfort.
Was he dead when he was rolling on the ground or still alive? Not sure if it was just nerve impulses or what.
Body shot, so he was most certainly alive. If he's been hit in the heart he wouldn't be moving like that and if he was hit in the head it would be more like a seizure in terms of movement
Damn, hit 3 times and he was running. That's just shit luck
Automatic weapons tends to fuck with your luck
Automatic weapons tends to fuck with your luck
Generally improving it. Automatic fire = less accurate
I would be fucking scared to go outside knowing there can be a sniper everywhere.
This was a retarded post (User was banned for this post ("Dumb post/question" - Starpluck))
Shit... That was disturbing. How many journalists have been killed by Assad's regime?
plenty of journalists have been killed there, including the incredibly awesome Marie Colvin who ignored the Syrian regime's ban on foreign journalists and was killed by a bomb
can I do a bad joke about bodyshots?
Grow up. What can you possibly gain from making a "funny joke" about something like this on an online forum? You should be ashamed of yourself.
Didn't look like the damage was done by a sniper.
Shit... That was disturbing. How many journalists have been killed by Assad's regime?
if you read the article it says at least 20
Can't this just fucking end already?
ouch! well fuck you Syria
Sad to see Yves Debay was recently killed too, he was in the business for years.
Didn't look like the damage was done by a sniper.
if it was automatic weapons fire the shots would have been in quicker succession.
if it was automatic weapons fire the shots would have been in quicker succession.
Semi-automatic shooter isn't automatically sniper. Soldiers are typically trained to use quick bursts or aimed semi-automatic fire to save ammunition and place more effective shots on target.
Generally improving it. Automatic fire = less accurate
You generally have less chances of surviving being shot at if there are 30 bullets going at supersonic speed towards you compared to a single one.
These journalists really are heros. It must take some serious balls to go out into a war zone armed with only a camera. I recently thought about maybe one day attempting this but after a Vice article about some guy who tried to be one unprepared along with now this guy I don't think I'll even attempt.
You generally have less chances of surviving being shot at if there are 30 bullets going at supersonic speed towards you compared to a single one.
That's the difference between the two.
They should have ran together, he gave the sniper time to prepare.
They should have ran together, he gave the sniper time to prepare.
easier to hit a group of people than a single person
Semi-automatic shooter isn't automatically sniper. Soldiers are typically trained to use quick bursts or aimed semi-automatic fire to save ammunition and place more effective shots on target.
Considering he was hit with 3 successive semi automatic shots, it's pretty easy to assume it was a marksmen.
Considering he was hit with 3 successive semi automatic shots, it's pretty easy to assume it was a marksmen.
I heard about 5 consecutive shots, I don't think he was hit 5 times. I know its possible with a rifle such as the SVD but its kind of far fetched. Then you could hear follow up automatic fire. I would put my bets on a rifleman killing him, but I don't don't think its logical to make assumptions on this since it could have just as easily been done with any assault rifle. It sounded very close though.
That wasn't a sniper, there had to been at least a few shots gone off leading him. SVD, or perhaps even just a standard AK. Regardless, none of them laid down any fire. He was basically running like a sheep being lead. I hate to say that, but a 'sniper' or anyone with a weapon has that much clear space to open fire on, and one person runs by, that just gives them a lead on where the other possible person is running too.
